Beware of glass, Hot Pocket lovers. Those microwavable pastries may contain unwanted hazards.
Nestlé Prepared Foods issued a recall on close to 763,000 pounds of frozen pepperoni hot pockets, following claims that the product may be contaminated with glass and plastic pieces, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service announced on Friday.
The recalled hot pockets, which were shipped out nationwide in November, were classified by the USDA as Class I – a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
So far, four consumer complaints have been received of extraneous material in the hot pocket product, along with one report of a minor oral injury resulting from the consumption of the product. Nestlé does not currently face legal action over the metal and glass pieces, but Top Class Actions tracks recalls because they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Nestlé USA said in a statement that exposure to, and consuming pieces of plastic and glass could pose a choking or laceration risk. In the statement, the company apologized to consumers.
Individuals who purchased the 54-oz carton packages containing 12 Nestlé Hot Pockets made with pork, chicken and beef with a best before Feb. 2022 date and lot codes 0318544624, 0319544614, 0320544614, and 0321544614 are advised to not consume the product, and either discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
If you believe you have been adversely affected by the product, seek medical attention immediately. You can also notify the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program via an online form, phone or fax.
Consumers who have further questions about the recall can contact Nestlé consumer services at (800) 350-5016. Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) or live chat via Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday.
Nestlé USA has faced a series of recalls in the recent months related to unwanted materials being discovered in their products. In Dec. 2020, Nestlé issued a Lean Cuisine recall following complaints from consumers who say they found pieces of plastic in their baked-chicken meals.
