Honda owners have filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker alleging that Honda CR-V vehicles are equipped with defective collision avoidance systems.

Lead plaintiffs Kathleen Cadena, Mukeshbai Patel, and Steven Geiger recently filed a class action against American Honda Motor Co. Inc., claiming that the company’s 2017 CR-V vehicles are equipped with a “Honda Sensing” system which makes driving the car more dangerous.

Cadena, Patel, and Geiger say they all experienced the system malfunction in their cars, purchased between June and October 2017. All three plaintiffs allegedly brought their car to a dealer for repairs, but continue to experience the issue.

The Honda Sensing system uses radar technology to detect nearby objects. The sensors alert the driver of imminent collisions or if the car is drifting out of its lane. The system can also be used in conjunction with cruise control to maintain a set distance from other vehicles. Honda Sensing comes standard with the EX, EX-L, and Touring CR-V models.

The Honda CR-V class action lawsuit claims that the collision avoidance system intermittently displays false collision warnings and reduces cruise control speed for no reason.

“But it is not only lack of repair that keeps owners of such class vehicles frustrated, but that when Honda Sensing system malfunctions, it does so abruptly, without warning, while the class vehicles are in motion on a public roadway,” the Honda Sensing class action lawsuit states. “The very system that was designed to keep drivers safe is in fact making them less safe by detracting their attention.”

The Honda CR-V crash sensing class action claims that Honda is aware of the software issue but has failed to take action to correct the bugs. The plaintiffs claim that in 2017 Honda allegedly sent a notice to authorized dealers informing them that the system was subject to sporadic false warnings and speed fluctuations in cruise control. The notice instructed dealers to update the system’s software to fix the issue.

“However, as evident from plaintiffs’ experiences and those of other consumers, the software update fails to correct the Honda Sensing defect or Honda’s dealers failed or refused even to perform such corrective action,” the Honda CR-V class action states.

Despite numerous consumer reports and an internal acknowledgement of the defect, Honda allegedly continues to keep silent to the public.

“Honda has never disclosed the Honda Sensing system defect to consumers – through its dealerships or otherwise,” the Honda crash sensing class action lawsuit claims. “It has not even stopped selling CR-V vehicles with defective Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive system; it continues to sell them – without including any warning – as both new vehicles and used vehicles.”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of owners and lessees of 2017 Honda CR-V models with the Honda Sensing system.

The Honda CR-V class action seeks damages, incidental damages, consequential damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

The plaintiffs are represented by Trinette G. Kent of Lemberg Law LLC.

The Honda CR-V Collision Avoidance System Class Action Lawsuit is Cadena, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-04007-MWF-PJW, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I’ve been complaining to the dealership about the same problems with my 2017 Honda crv touring model I honestly just want to twentieth the damn car and get my money back. The computer keeps having issues the braking system stops out of nowhere. I was entering an intersection when my car just started so suddenly my son and I flew forward and there was nothing and no one any where around. It’s also happened to me on the freeway asking with my whole panel going dark so that I can’t even see my speed. This car is a piece of crap highly disappointed and have been looking at filling a lemon law complaint. Please keep me posted on this class action I hate this car. Oh and to top it off the computer relay between the computer and the engine and transmission i took to the dealership several times and they claimed nothing was wrong, until it started smoking come to find out there was a leak somehow and it messed up the transmission. I’ve had so many codes flash on this car is a joke.

Oh and to top it off the computer relay between the engine and transmission is horrible I took it to the dealership several times complaining of a lag in the acceleration and they claimed nothing was wrong, until it started smoking. Come to find out there was a leak somehow and it messed up the transmission funny how they didn’t catch it for almost a year and the car was no longer under warranty. I’ve had so many codes flash on this car is a joke.

I’m having the same issue with my 2017 Honda CR-V EX. Three times now the brakes have hit themselves, 2 of those times while I was on the freeway. This last time, right after it happened all of my warning lights starting flashing, including the lane departure one, the road mitigation one, the cruise control one, one about lights, and another one I can’t remember anymore. Of course when I turned the car off and back on, they were no longer flashing. I’m taking it to dealership tomorrow, but I really hope they don’t tell me what they told one of people that already posted, that they can’t do anything about it unless/until they see the lights themselves. Wish I would’ve gotten a video of it to show them beforehand. Either way, even if I get lucky and they fix it, I want to be a part of this lawsuit. I don’t want to be responsible for any bills that come of this.

Our CRV just had a blindspot system failure with 35k miles. We bought it brand new. How do we join the lawl suit?

  4. Brenda Rose says:

I was in accident in May 2020 with our. 2011 Honda Accord airbag didn’t deploy and I hit my head on the windshield

  5. Brett Latimer says:

I am having this same exact issue with my 2018 CRV EX-L. Sudden braking for no apparent reason and without warning. I have had it to the dealer multiple times and have talked to Honda multiple times. They refuse to do anything about it until they see it happen. Since it is sporadic and does not log any errors when it happens, they will never find it. I would like to be part of this class action suit and will provide any info necessary including pictures of my warnings when it has happened. They claim that I need to clean my radar frequently. It happens and then resets and does not happen again for several months, without cleaning the radar. They try to make you think it is your fault or you are lying.

We bought our Honda CRV in Jan 2017, it was almost new launch then. Since, next day of purchase, we are having sensing issues. Many a times Car took sudden brake on interstate and cars behind had honked on our craziness. It is very scary. We have taken care to dealers multiple times but nothing much has happened. In fact, it is scary to drive this car. Please advise, what to do and whom to contact?

  7. Christina OHalloran says:

This is also happening with the newer Honda vehicles. I bought a brand new 2019 Pilot that has a mind of its own. Very scary.

  8. Rohit says:

I have the same issue. How can I be a part of the lawsuit?

  9. Stephanie S says:

My car is at the dealership now with the same issues as mentioned above. All system warning lights come on. I’ve had the brake issue a couple times. Today they are telling me there are two warnings that need to be repaired, and all the other ones are just triggering because of these two. One, is coverred by the extended warranty. HOWEVER, they are trying to charge me $1630.00 to fix what they “think” the problem is. I asked him for a copy of the paperwork that shows the warnings and he gave me a sheet with a bunch of gibberish on it!!!!!!

  10. Amy Howson says:

All of my sensor systems problem lights and warnings came on my car today for no reason. The brake system light is also on. I have a 2017 Honda CRV and it is my only means of transportation.

    1. Ryan R. says:

Amy — I just purchased a used 2018 Honda CRV with 17K miles on it and within 5 days the SAME warnings popped up on my dash. My vehicle is at the Honda dealership now in Downtown Chicago and they’re claiming the sensor has to be recalibrated and charging me $250 to have it repaired and NOT covered under warranty. What so we do?
