Honda owners have filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker alleging that Honda CR-V vehicles are equipped with defective collision avoidance systems.

Lead plaintiffs Kathleen Cadena, Mukeshbai Patel, and Steven Geiger recently filed a class action against American Honda Motor Co. Inc., claiming that the company’s 2017 CR-V vehicles are equipped with a “Honda Sensing” system which makes driving the car more dangerous.

Cadena, Patel, and Geiger say they all experienced the system malfunction in their cars, purchased between June and October 2017. All three plaintiffs allegedly brought their car to a dealer for repairs, but continue to experience the issue.

The Honda Sensing system uses radar technology to detect nearby objects. The sensors alert the driver of imminent collisions or if the car is drifting out of its lane. The system can also be used in conjunction with cruise control to maintain a set distance from other vehicles. Honda Sensing comes standard with the EX, EX-L, and Touring CR-V models.

The Honda CR-V class action lawsuit claims that the collision avoidance system intermittently displays false collision warnings and reduces cruise control speed for no reason.

“But it is not only lack of repair that keeps owners of such class vehicles frustrated, but that when Honda Sensing system malfunctions, it does so abruptly, without warning, while the class vehicles are in motion on a public roadway,” the Honda Sensing class action lawsuit states. “The very system that was designed to keep drivers safe is in fact making them less safe by detracting their attention.”

The Honda CR-V crash sensing class action claims that Honda is aware of the software issue but has failed to take action to correct the bugs. The plaintiffs claim that in 2017 Honda allegedly sent a notice to authorized dealers informing them that the system was subject to sporadic false warnings and speed fluctuations in cruise control. The notice instructed dealers to update the system’s software to fix the issue.

“However, as evident from plaintiffs’ experiences and those of other consumers, the software update fails to correct the Honda Sensing defect or Honda’s dealers failed or refused even to perform such corrective action,” the Honda CR-V class action states.

Despite numerous consumer reports and an internal acknowledgement of the defect, Honda allegedly continues to keep silent to the public.

“Honda has never disclosed the Honda Sensing system defect to consumers – through its dealerships or otherwise,” the Honda crash sensing class action lawsuit claims. “It has not even stopped selling CR-V vehicles with defective Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive system; it continues to sell them – without including any warning – as both new vehicles and used vehicles.”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of owners and lessees of 2017 Honda CR-V models with the Honda Sensing system.

The Honda CR-V class action seeks damages, incidental damages, consequential damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

The plaintiffs are represented by Trinette G. Kent of Lemberg Law LLC.

The Honda CR-V Collision Avoidance System Class Action Lawsuit is Cadena, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-04007-MWF-PJW, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I also have had false sensing with mine and braking for naught. I am an owner of a Honda CRV 2017. and would like to join this lawsuit.

Is there a way to join the class action law suit ? My 2017 has suddenly 11 times in the two years and one month that I’ve owned it. I’ve taken it back to the dealer four times. Honda says they can find nothing wrong with the car. When they drive it they cannot make it stop without cause. Can somebody bring a lawsuit against the dealer and Honda America if they sell the car they’re having a problem with ? I don’t want to live dangerously I want a good car to drive.

I bought a 2017 Honda CR-V EXL and also started having problems with it at less than 3,000 miles. I experienced oil in the engine w/ noxious fumes in the interior cabin, issues with the collision avoidance system, the heater and A/C didn’t work properly, and the engine would cut out unexpectedly. I took it to the dealership and they worked on the heater and A/C, changed the oil and said there wasn’t anything else they could do. I was told “Honda knew about the problem with ‘the software’ and hadn’t released a fix yet,” so I was told to drive with the window down. I have health issues and went to discuss this with my salesman who told me, “I don’t build them. I just sell them.” At the time I didn’t realize the seriousness of the problem, I just knew I couldn’t drive my car the way it was because it caused my tolerable pre-existing health issues to become intolerable. (I became so irritated that I coughed up blood after driving the car… which was a first for me.) How do I sign up for this? Please advise. Thank you.

Lack of Fuel Economy, the Honda CRV 2018 was advertising to me as 28 city 34 hwy mpg, but I only get about 19 mpg. I feel cheated and scammed. I address the issue to my local dealer and they refused to check the vehicle. I want to return it and money back. I was not aware of the oil dilution and oil and gas mixture, but I will start checking this as well.

maybe you dont know how to drive the vehicle

  6. Joseph Crugnale says:

I have an attorney working for me with the PA state “lemon law”. This CRV has been nothing but a nightmare, so many problems, with safety features, adaptive cruise control, hard-braking for no reason. The stereo/infotainment system goes out (black) & I have to turn radio on & off a few times to get it back on. In addition, oil is mixing in with gasoline. Car has less than 3,000 miles & I’ve had oil changed 6 times, going for # 7 next week. The heater doesn’t work properly either, most often it blows lukewarm air at best, unless I drive about 1 hour, then it will start to work. The highest temperature coming out of vent has been 120 degrees F

    1. Joseph Crugnale says:

I also have an 2018 Honda CRV EXL, with less than 3,000 miles. I’ve had many, many problems with the safety features. Same description as some above. My car hard brakes for NO reason. It also “beeps” indicating a possible collision, and there is not a car in sight!

  10. Riaz Khan says:
