Honda owners have filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker alleging that Honda CR-V vehicles are equipped with defective collision avoidance systems.

Lead plaintiffs Kathleen Cadena, Mukeshbai Patel, and Steven Geiger recently filed a class action against American Honda Motor Co. Inc., claiming that the company’s 2017 CR-V vehicles are equipped with a “Honda Sensing” system which makes driving the car more dangerous.

Cadena, Patel, and Geiger say they all experienced the system malfunction in their cars, purchased between June and October 2017. All three plaintiffs allegedly brought their car to a dealer for repairs, but continue to experience the issue.

The Honda Sensing system uses radar technology to detect nearby objects. The sensors alert the driver of imminent collisions or if the car is drifting out of its lane. The system can also be used in conjunction with cruise control to maintain a set distance from other vehicles. Honda Sensing comes standard with the EX, EX-L, and Touring CR-V models.

The Honda CR-V class action lawsuit claims that the collision avoidance system intermittently displays false collision warnings and reduces cruise control speed for no reason.

“But it is not only lack of repair that keeps owners of such class vehicles frustrated, but that when Honda Sensing system malfunctions, it does so abruptly, without warning, while the class vehicles are in motion on a public roadway,” the Honda Sensing class action lawsuit states. “The very system that was designed to keep drivers safe is in fact making them less safe by detracting their attention.”

The Honda CR-V crash sensing class action claims that Honda is aware of the software issue but has failed to take action to correct the bugs. The plaintiffs claim that in 2017 Honda allegedly sent a notice to authorized dealers informing them that the system was subject to sporadic false warnings and speed fluctuations in cruise control. The notice instructed dealers to update the system’s software to fix the issue.

“However, as evident from plaintiffs’ experiences and those of other consumers, the software update fails to correct the Honda Sensing defect or Honda’s dealers failed or refused even to perform such corrective action,” the Honda CR-V class action states.

Despite numerous consumer reports and an internal acknowledgement of the defect, Honda allegedly continues to keep silent to the public.

“Honda has never disclosed the Honda Sensing system defect to consumers – through its dealerships or otherwise,” the Honda crash sensing class action lawsuit claims. “It has not even stopped selling CR-V vehicles with defective Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive system; it continues to sell them – without including any warning – as both new vehicles and used vehicles.”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of owners and lessees of 2017 Honda CR-V models with the Honda Sensing system.

The Honda CR-V class action seeks damages, incidental damages, consequential damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

The plaintiffs are represented by Trinette G. Kent of Lemberg Law LLC.

The Honda CR-V Collision Avoidance System Class Action Lawsuit is Cadena, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-04007-MWF-PJW, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I have 2017 CRV EX, bought my car August 2017 started to have sensor issues in April 2018. Took my car to dealership was told it was my Florida Sunpass. I argued with them until they checked it out. No codes came up but they plugged my Vin number into their system and determined to update software. They updated software and very next day had same issue. Took it back and they replaced the front camera sensor and viola two days later during a mild rain it came back on.
I have not contacted them as the only response will be ” during adverse weather, sensor can stop working”. This is a fault in their product as it should NOT stop working in bad weather but help when you are not able to see clearly. Why else would you purchase a vehicle with these sensors to jnly have them working in perfect weather conditions? I can see perfectly then!
    The issues I have had:
    high beam sensor not working
One or more sensors not working
While utilizing ACC & LKA my car went from 65 mph to 30 instantly with no obstruction in front of me. .

I would like to be part of this class action lawsuit please as I have documentation from dealership of work being completed.

I am on my second Honda CRV. First one was wrecked. No air bags were deployed. My second car. Is now experiencing some of the same mechanical problems my first one did. Not thrilled with this car!

  4. Lynn Spiro says:

I have a Honda 2017 CRV and I experienced that the vehicle stopped causing an accident due to sensors. My vehicle was in for repairs and after a few months after repairs, my vehicle did the same thing only with my husband in the vehicle with me. My car stopped again almost causing another accident.

Correction. Difficult to see on a cell phone.

OMG! My vehicle has slammed on the brakes twice out of nowhere after a “break” alert on the dash. Fortunately, I was on the road by myself and only going 30 miles per hour and there was nothing else around on the two different occasions that it chose to slam on the brakes. I had been wondering why no one else was reporting having any problems such as this. Now the vehicle flashes the “break” alert on the dashboard, but it doesn’t break which is a good thing because I’m usually on the highway traveling at least 60 to 65 mph and there’s never anything around me to cause the vehicle to do that. I also keep getting a “brake system” error which means none of those safety features will work and that’s a good thing because I don’t have to be concerned about the vehicle possibly slamming on the brakes. The Honda dealer keeps saying that there are no errors every time I take it to the shop; Honda had my vehicle for weeks yet still nothing and they claimed that there was nothing reported. There is clearly a programming issue; if the system were properly programmed, those errors would be recorded. I purchased this vehicle after having an accident and my last CRV(my fault), which I expected to protect me on the road, not endanger my life just from driving on the road. As of recent, my parking brake turns on every time I turn the vehicle off. This is not a safety issue, but it has become pretty annoying. Shame on Honda!

  5. V. Karlski says:

2014 Honda Civic (ft end deer strike) air bags failed to deploy. Car was totaled because of massive front end and engine damage. Honda was asked to send out a field tech to determine why the air bag sensors failed. Was told it’s not Honda’s problem. 2015 accord (unintended acceleration and severe hesitation). Car was allegedly diagnosed by a field rep at the Honda dealer and was told no codes. A vehicle does not have to store a code to indicate a malfunction. Honda builds Garbage and will never see my business again.
