GM to Finish Paying Dex-Cool Class Action Settlements

By Matt O’Donnell

GM logoMore than 10,000 GM owners covered under a 2008 class action lawsuit settlement may finally get reimbursed for some of their losses. Reimbursement of the GM class action settlement was put on hold when it filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

In 2008, General Motors agreed to pay up to $800 each to owners of up to 35 million GM vehicles that had a factory coolant, called “Dex-Cool,” that was linked to engine failures or cooling system problems. GM began using Dex-Cool in 1995 models and received thousands of complaints from owners concerning engine and radiator problems. In 2003, GM owners filed a series of class action lawsuits against the car manufacturer.

Approval of the GM Dex-Cool settlement was given in October 2008. GM received over 68,000 claims and paid $6.1 million to settle about 40,000 of the claims. However, when the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009, the unpaid Dex-Cool settlement claims remained in bankruptcy as part of the old GM, now known as Motors Liquidation Co.

The Detroit News reports that a new GM Dex-Cool settlement has been proposed and the company has already approved claims totaling $1.3 million for 6,685 GM owners and must still review another 4,614 claims. Under the new Dex-Cool class action lawsuit settlement, owners will get stock in the new GM that will be sold for cash to cover the claims. The amount of stock each class member gets will not be known until the bankruptcy court formally approves the liquidation plan and sets a date for the transfer of stock to GM creditors.

The GM Dex-Cool class action lawsuit settlement covers 1995-2004 model year vehicles, including no-longer-built models like the Pontiac Aztec, Grand Am and Gran Prix. You can find more information on the settlement at www.motorsliquidationdocket.com

DexCool ruined our 2003 Gm van. Chevy sucks. Of course. I think Ford sucks too. I have been told by friends for years that domestic car makers suck and to only buy Toyota. We finally gave in several years ago. And we have had zero issues. 250K miles and still going. We will never buy domestic again. Especially after they robbed America.

At 47,000 miles my 1999 Chev Blazer was full of sludge. My repairs cost $1,701.26. at a reputable radiator shop that guaranteed their repairs. The dealer said they wouldn’t do the work because GM wouldn’t reimburse them. How terrible to NOT take care of the vehicles you sell & then file bankruptcy. Also let the government bail you out and then publicise how many billions you are making. Where is your conscience??? I worked hard to buy my Blazer. I am a Senior and I will never forget this matter as long as I live and will tell everyone I know that I still have not got the $800. that I was promised in the Class Action Lawsuit. I will never ever buy a GM product again. I do not TRUST GM.

I have a Malibu LS 2002. I attached all of my information to the original lawsuit information. I received paper work in the mail, which I still have, filled it out with all the requested documents. I had over $700.00 in repairs but received a settlement check of $21.00. It is my opinion the company filled bankruptcy to keep from paying the large law suit. The government should have done more to ensure the return of monies to the consumer in the same manner of the company it bailed out. Now some of the shops you take your car to remembers the problem with the coolant and will tell you the intake gasket needs to be replaced. This has happened to me 3 times after only taking my car for an oil change. Of course when I take it someplace else I get an oil change with no one coming in with a clipboard filled with problems from the intake gasket. Personally, I think it is disgraceful the way the consumer was treated. For that reason, I will not own another GMC vehicle.

I just bought a used 2007 Pontiac G6 hard top convertible from a dealership in late August 2014 and now I have an issue that the dealership says I need to replace the head gasket and oil pan – $2000 repair! I had is further inspected by a trusted car repairman who just recently fixed my 2001 GMC Jimmy that had the engine blow up – all due to DEX-COOL! My Pontiac only has $70,000 miles and the aluminum oil pan does not have to be replaced- it is an issue with the intake manifold gasket. You cannot even trust the dealership that took the car to a trusted GM shop for diagnosis. Why is there no recall on this DEX-COOL?
I called the GM complaint number 866-418-9319 and they act like they know nothing about the company they worked for -what a bunch of uneducated employees. Does anyone know of an attorney in Illinois who would like to take this on? I am not part of the class action lawsuit. I will never buy a car from General Motors again!

My 2002 impala coolant radiator problem can i still tapke action? Thank you!

  6. Edward phel says:

looks like I’ve run into the same problem with intake manifold gaskets leaking from DEX-COOL. At first I thought that stuff was rust. I had to change the radiator out because of a crack but after changing radiator discovered intake manifold leak blowing DEX-COOL to the engine firewall. Who do we send remittance to recover funds for repair of gaskets? Does anyone know?

My beloved 1999 Chevy Venture van with 4.3 V6 engine failed on April 18 2013 at 152,850 miles. It experienced sudden loss of power in construction zone on I-57 near Bradley, IL and was towed in. New spark plug wires five days ago and new plugs at 134,000 miles. Mechanic checked for lack of fuel problem and ruled that out. Venture was started and engine and it shook violently and was diagnosed as lower engine failure. due to blown intake manifold gasket failure which allowed antifreeze into the engine oil, which attacked bearings and ruined lubrication of the engine oil; which ruined bearings where piston rods attach to crankshaft. Mechanic said he had seen many blown intake manifold problems with Chevrolet 3.4 V6 and other Chevy engines and problems are publicized all over the Internet, as well as problems with DEX-COOL. I went on-line and was shocked to learn the extent of financial loss to so many GM and Chevy owners. Had I known about this issue, I would not have invested in a rebuilt transmission and new radiator 5 months earlier.
-On Dec 24 2012 at 151,326 miles, transmission failed on I-65 and was towed in. Failure due to 50% restriction in radiator ATF cooling tubes. Transmission rebuilt and radiator replaced at cost of $2,889.
-On June 7 2012 at148,564 miles, engine was losing coolant so intake manifold gasket was replaced at cost of $724.
-On Oct 10, 2010 at 129,196 transmission rebuilt due to hard shifting at cost of $1,392.
-On Sept 24 2010 at 138,397 miles engine was overheating, so cooling system flushed and refilled with DEX-COOL at cost of $145.58.
-On April 19, 2002 at 68,435 miles, intake -manifold gasket replaced first time at cost of $701
-On Jan 25 1999 we purchased Chevy Venture van, took good care of it and expected engine to reach 200,000 miles.
I loved my Venture, took good care of it, expected engine to make 200,000 miles with no problems. Additional repairs: New plug wires at 152,389 cost $201. New muffler at 151,889 cost $96. Throttle body repair at 151,009 cost $175. New front brakes at 149,354 cost $150. Headlight at 145,982 cost $246. Two tires at 141,061 cost $139. New spark plugs at 134,499 cost $150. Oil changes at 151.012-148,546-145,140-138,053-135,356-132,083
Please send me address of where to send my documentation so Executives at GM, Chevy, DEX-COOL know about turmoil and financial loss of poorly engineered intake manifold gaskets and DEX-COOL antifreeze. I feel like a fool and hope to get some of my repair money back.

I believe 32-35,000,000 Cars & trucks were included. But everyone i knew that had a GM, also had a problem. Not 1 of them knew of the lawsuit. Even so, Max payout was $800, after they went BK, it went to 30% of that. You can read for years on end frompeople that filed, that recieved ” NO REPLY AT ALL” and they know now, they never will.

The worst part was to see, single women & seniors, that have no clue & went into the stealerships for repair, & they put dexcool back in the car……….My brothers silverado had a black tar goo, truck go BOOM.
Right out of warranty, but i read all over the WWW, that many cars & trucks made by GM, go south right out of warranty………………………..Gm knows how to treat a customer. They wait til you turn your head, then kick you in the teeth. This is Coming from a Ford owner. I knew better when i was 16. The Chevy Vega was Touted Car & Drivers ” CAR OF THE YEAR” I knew then GM stunk, & that anyone that says A vega is car of the year, is either on crack, or paid to say that…………………Take your pick.

Dex Cool should have been removed from the market and every car old and new changed over. Thanks to two GM cars requiring extensive repairs because of this, me and my family will never purchase another GM car or a car that has had Dex cool. I think another suit should be filed for those of us who have bought older Chevy or other GM cars and had the expense of intake manifold gaskets, head gaskets, etc. From all of my research, the Dex Cool is a major factor in this type of repair and I do not even want another American car!
