The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent out refunds and settlement payments from four cases in July, compensating consumers for lending scams, education false advertising and more.

Life Management Services FTC refunds

The FTC is sending over $540,000 in refunds to consumers who paid Life Management Services for fake debt relief.

According to claims from the FTC and Florida attorney general, Life Management and other related companies harassed consumers with illegal robocalls advertising their debt-relief programs. These programs allegedly claimed to lower interest rates or eliminate debt entirely but, in reality, only charged them upfront fees.

From a settlement reached with Life Management, the FTC is sending more than $540,000 in refunds to 4,604 consumers affected by the company’s debt relief scheme. The average refund amount is $117.

Those who receive an FTC refund check should cash it within 90 days.

Questions about these refunds can be directed to JND Legal Administration at 877-381-0342.

My Online Business Education FTC refunds

Consumers who paid for My Online Business Education (MOBE) business coaching may be able to receive a second refund from an FTC settlement.

The FTC claims MOBE falsely promised its business education program was “proven” to let consumers start successful online businesses and earn substantial income. In reality, the MOBE business scheme allegedly required consumers to sell memberships in order to make money and most participants reportedly lost money.

The FTC sent $19 million in refunds to MOBE participants in April 2022. Now the FTC is sending an additional $4.6 million in refunds to 25,260 people. Consumers are eligible for a second refund payment if they accepted their first payment and paid more than $456 to MOBE.

Those who receive a PayPal payment must accept it within 30 days. Those who receive an FTC refund check should cash it within 90 days.

University of Phoenix FTC settlement payments

The FTC is sending a second round of settlement payments worth $3.6 million to consumers who were deceived by University of Phoenix job-placement advertisements.

According to the FTC, the University of Phoenix falsely promised prospective students they could work for prominent employers after graduation, including Microsoft, Twitter, Adobe and Yahoo. The university allegedly claimed to tailor its course curricula in order to better qualify students for these jobs. The FTC argues these advertisements were false and misleading.

The FTC sent $45.6 million in payments to University of Phoenix students in March 2021. Now, with the remaining settlement funds, the FTC is sending $3.6 million in additional settlement payments to 130,652 students. Consumers can receive a second payment if they cashed their first check or accepted their first payment.

Those who receive a PayPal payment must accept it within 30 days, while those who receive an FTC settlement check should cash it within 90 days.

Questions about the FTC settlement can be directed to Rust Consulting at 877-310-0487.

Amazon Flex drivers FTC refunds

Amazon Flex drivers can benefit from a second distribution of FTC refunds returning millions in withheld tips to drivers.

The FTC claims Amazon withheld $61.7 million in tips from Flex drivers. According to the regulator, Amazon Flex drivers should have received this compensation while delivering for the company.

In November 2021, the FTC sent out the first round of refund payments to over 140,000 Amazon Flex drivers. These initial refunds amounted to nearly $60 million. Now the FTC is resending refund checks to Amazon Flex drivers who did not cash their initial payment.

Individuals who receive an FTC refund check should cash it within 90 days. Payments of $600 or more will come with an IRS 1099 tax form, which should be reported on 2023 taxes.

Consumers with questions about the FTC refunds can contact Rust Consulting at 800-654-8874.
