In February, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent out thousands of refund checks and payments to consumers affected by fraudulent schemes and false advertising.

Ygrene Pace Financing FTC settlement

The FTC and the state of Carolina reached a $3 million settlement with Ygrene Energy Fund to resolve claims the home improvement lender misled consumers about whether financing would interfere with home sales or liens.

According to the FTC and California, Ygrene and its contractors deceived customers by telling them that home improvement financing wouldn’t interfere with house sales or refinancing opportunities. In reality, the PACE financing offered by Ygrene allegedly placed a first-priority lien against the home.

Consumers with an outstanding lien placed by Ygrene have been sent a survey to determine if homeowners are eligible for the release of their liens or other monetary benefits.

Homeowners who receive a settlement survey must submit their responses by March 2, 2023, via mail or online.

Triangle Media FTC refunds

The FTC is sending out a second round of checks totaling over $1.3 million to consumers who were charged the full price for Triangle Media plans after signing up for a “free” trial.

According to the FTC, Triangle Media promised consumers “risk-free” trial offers for skin creams, electronic cigarettes and supplements but later charged the full price for the products without consumer knowledge. The scheme allegedly cost consumers up to $98.71 without their knowledge or consent.

The FTC sent an initial round of checks in June 2020 which paid refund customers $7.3 million. With the remaining settlement fund, the FTC is sending a second round of checks worth $1.3 million. Consumers who cashed their first check and paid Triangle Media over $50 are eligible for this second round of refunds.

Consumers who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days.

Consumers can contact Rust Consulting Inc. at 877-625-9411 with any additional questions.

Moneygram FTC refunds

Consumers may benefit from $115 million in FTC refunds if they sent money to scammers using MoneyGram.

Despite a 2009 settlement with the FTC, MoneyGram allegedly failed to make changes to its platform to reduce fraud. In 2018, the company agreed to another settlement with the FTC, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) to refund customers for losses incurred as a result of MoneyGram fraud.

Over $115 million in FTC refunds were sent to 38,889 consumers in February. Each consumer will receive a complete refund of the amount they paid scammers through MoneyGram between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2017.

Those who receive an FTC refund check should cash it right away.

Neurometrix Quell FTC refunds

A second round of PayPal payments is going out to consumers who purchased Quell, a wearable pain relief device.

According to the FTC, Neurometrix falsely advertised Quell as “clinically proven” and “FDA cleared” despite lacking scientific evidence. These claims were allegedly used to mislead consumers into purchasing the device for full-body pain relief when placed below the knee.

The FTC sent an initial round of $3.4 million in checks and refunds between September 2020 and August 2021. The agency is distributing the remaining $300,000 in funds to 40,244 consumers through PayPal payments. These refunds were sent to consumers who accepted their initial refund payment.

Consumers have 30 days to accept their PayPal payment.

8 Figure Dream Lifestyle FTC refunds

The FTC sent a second round of checks and PayPal payments totaling over $390,000 to consumers who paid for a scheme called “8 Figure Dream Lifestyle.”

The 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle reportedly used illegal robocalls, phone calls, text messages, internet ads, social media posts and other advertisements to market a “bogus” money-making scheme. These advertisements falsely promised that consumers could earn $10,000 or more in only 60 to 90 days, the FTC claims. In reality, most people allegedly lost their entire investments.

An initial round of payments sent in October 2021 provided $740,000 in refunds to consumers. The FTC is now sending a second round of refunds worth $390,000 to 1,542 consumers who paid more than $2,000 to the defendants and who accepted their first payments.

Consumers who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers have 30 days to accept their PayPal payment.
