Ford SUV Brake Recall Overview:
- Who: Ford has announced a recall for nearly 115,000 of its Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs.
- Why: The company discovered an issue with the rear brake linings in the 2020 and 2021 vehicle models.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
Ford has announced a recall for nearly 115,000 of its 2021 and 2022 model Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs over faulty rear brake linings.
The defective brake linings can lead to a decrease in the performance of the vehicles’ power braking, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ford says the recall notification will be mailed out to customers starting in January but reassured drivers there have so far been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the recall.
The issue, which Ford says is caused by incorrect manufacturing, prevents the affected Bronco Sport and Ford Escapes from complying with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, according to the recall notice.
Ford says drivers may need to apply more force to their brake pedals during certain situations to get them to work properly and that the distance required for the vehicle to stop may also be longer as a result.
“The stopping distance test results for ‘Brake Power Assist Unit Inoperative’ were 191.9 m, which exceeds the federal regulation of 168 m,” according to an NHTSA chronology detailing the issue.
Defect Affects Vehicles Manufactured With a Brake Vacuum Booster and Not Electronic Brake Boosters
The defect affects Ford Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs that were manufactured with a brake vacuum booster, according to the chronology, which explained the issue is not present for vehicles manufactured with an Electronic Brake Booster instead.
“When the vacuum sensor is present, the brake system can detect a booster malfunction and the ABS module assists during the ‘Brake Power Assist Unit Inoperative’ portion and compensates for friction material variation,” the recall states.
While the company says there is no known remedy to fix the issue, it is urging any concerned drivers to contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
Drivers can also contact the NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit them online.
Ford issued a separate recall earlier this year for some of its 2021 Ford F-150 SuperCab pickups, which the company says were manufactured with front seatbelts that were incorrectly routed.
