Ford diesel truck class action overview:

  • Who: Ford is being sued by the owner of a Ford diesel truck.
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges his truck is fitted with a defective fuel injection pump.
  • Where: The Ford diesel truck class action lawsuit was filed in a Michigan federal court.

Ford sold hundreds of thousands of diesel trucks with defective fuel injection pumps that can cause catastrophic engine failure, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Keith T. Williams filed the class action complaint against Ford Motor Company Dec. 7 in a Michigan federal court, alleging violations of South Carolina consumer laws and federal warranty laws.

According to the lawsuit, Ford designed, manufactured and sold hundreds of thousands of 2011-present model year Ford diesel trucks equipped with 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engines which contain defective high-pressure fuel injection pumps (CP4 pumps).

The allegedly defective pumps were supplied by Bosch, the lawsuit adds.

“Ford has concealed from consumers the crucial fact that the CP4 pump has a fragile and unstable design, which causes metal parts to rub against each other on the first day of operation and through the life of the vehicle,” Williams states.

“This friction generates metal shavings that contaminate the fuel system, which inevitably will cause component wear, and can lead to catastrophic engine failure.”

Ford concealed pump defect, lawsuit alleges

Ford never disclosed the allegedly critical defect to consumers at the point of sale or in any other communication, Williams alleges.

“While cheap and simple, the pump is — as others have described it — a ticking ‘time bomb,’” he says.

The lawsuit alleges that Ford knew that the CP4 pump’s fragile design — which generates metal shavings in the fuel system regardless of fuel quality — is incompatible with U.S. diesel fuel, which is not lubricious.

He says repair costs for a catastrophic failure are at least $10,000, are time-intensive, and don’t fix the issue long-term.

“Some victims of Ford’s scheme are businesses which own several vehicles and have suffered multiple failures,” Williams said. “Others have spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on repairs and mitigation efforts.”

He’s looking to represent anyone in South Carolina who purchased or leased a 2011-present Ford “Super Duty” truck containing a 6.7L “Power Stroke” diesel engine.

He’s seeking recovery of the purchase price of class vehicles, compensation for overpayment and diminution in value of the vehicles, out-of-pocket and incidental expenses, disgorgement of profits, and an injunction compelling Ford to replace or recall and fix the vehicles.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. has been hit with another class action lawsuit alleging it sold vehicles manufactured with 3G telematics equipment that is now obsolete due to AT&T phasing out 3G technology in 2022.

  1. Douglas McCoy says:

I have a 2016 F350 have to replace the entire fuel system due to metal shavings in the fuel lines. Called ford about the issue and was told only certain vins are being recalled at this time. I mentioned the lawsuit and attorney and they hung up on me. 18k for repairs.

  2. marlene callen says:

Our 2019 F250 is in the shop awaiting a fuel pump. It’s stranded us on interstate 80 with our grandson when it just stopped. The dealership is telling us that there are over 1500 on the waitlist for a fuel pump. Five months ago we had to spend $5800 as wiring burned up the fan units for the heating and cooling. It started having problems at 8000 miles went out at 58,000 miles and Ford said it wasn’t part of their problem as the #Warranty was over.

    1. Donald Burns says:

I have 2013 f550 with 11,000.00 miles .now out of pocket almost $15,000.00 for fuel pump. Will Ford pay for their problem that they have known about
      .

  3. Rodney Underwood says:

2019 Ford F260. Fuel system blew out. They alleged to begin with that gas was in diesel. Made them give me a sample. Took to fuel distribution they did the burn test. No gasoline. Went back after some more they admitted it is a defective pump not designed to work on US lean fuels. 14000.00 later got truck out of shop. Live in Florida

  4. John Glenna says:

I have a 2012 F350 powerstoke 6.7,I hade to replace the entire fuel system, over 10K because of the total CP4 Fuel system failure

  5. Debra Robbins says:

Our 2014 Ford F350 6.7L is in the shop now with failed CP4 high pressure fuel pump, estimated repairs of $16000. It through metal shaving into the entire fuel system. Was told this is a problem for the faulty CP4 that replaced the prior CP3 pump, which was used up until 2011. Dodge already recalled all these because they knew it was an issue. Ford now needs to stand up and take responsibility for the problem equipment used in their heavy duty towing vehicles. Ticking time bomb that leave people stranded and outrageous repair bills.

  6. Monacia T Worley says:

Had the Low Fuel Pressure flash across the dash and truck went into low power mode, managed to get it off the side of the interstate. The truck shut off and hasn’t cranked back yet. And like everyone else I can’t afford the CP4 replacement on top of the payments. Ford truly needs to do better by their customers, and own the fact that they (FMC) put a part on American trucks that wasn’t designed to run our cleaner fuel.

  7. Kathryn says:

Spent over $14k getting the entire fuel system replaced on a Ford F350 power stroke less than 4 months ago. Now we’re having issues again. Just spent $2k getting it flushed and they are telling us that they don’t know if the repairs will be sustainable because they found metal shavings

  8. Gerry says:

2015 f350 lariat! PS I’m in BC CANADA.
Low fuel pressure, shut me down. Finally got home, replaced fuel filters, truck worked ok for about 1 month
Now again had my son pull me home in his 1/2 ton Dodge. That alone should win the lawsuits lol.
Hope Ford comes clean cause I ain’t ready to spend 15k

  9. Kenneth Karlson says:

I have a 2019 f250 with a 6.7 pump blew up they wouldn’t cover under warranty . It first blew a hi pressure fuel line covered under warranty still had a hard time starting they brought it back in said all set drove 2 miles and lost power brought back to ford they replaced all injectors under warranty then took it home and
The next dat wouldn’t start at all. Towed to ford they took off the primary field filter and said theirs contamination in the fuel system . Now everything up till now was warranty now they said I have to pay to get it fixed . I brought the secondary filter in and said check this one no contamination it . So system replaced 20000 miles later it blew up again . They said contamination again

  10. Donnie Baker says:

I purchased a 2015 f350 king ranch for my hauling business and now after it being down since October of 2022 I’m at risk of Losing everything due to it still having fuel problems and having to cover truck payments & insurance payments on a truck that I can’t use.
