Sanitation workers in Evansville, Wisconsin have asked the public to stop flushing “flushable wipes.”

An article in the local newspaper says county officials have spent or planned to spend about $2 million to combat problems at their pumping stations stemming from flushable wipes gumming up the infrastructure. This includes adult wipes, baby wipes, and other bathroom wipes.

And these concerns may apply to a private home’s plumbing as much as they apply to municipal sewer systems.

Though flushable wipes are marketed as flushable, they may cause clogged toilets. Consumer Reports tested wipes and found that they often don’t break down quickly. In some cases, they didn’t break down completely, even after being chopped up with a mixer.

In addition, sanitation worker say the wipes can cause bigger problems because they can bind together with each other or other waste products — promoting the possibility of sewer or plumbing clogs.

For homeowners, this often means shouldering the costs of damage caused by the wipes. Many have complained that claims about the wipes are deceptive.

A flushable wipes class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of legal action. Such a lawsuit could allege that the manufacturers of the wipes did not adequately test their products for sewer safety. In addition, the lawsuit could allege that the wipes could damage pipes and cost homeowners hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars.
