Six individuals from across the country have joined together to file a lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb alleging they suffered serious Eliquis bleeding problems.
McKesson Corporation and Pfizer are also named as defendants in the lawsuit as they are involved in the packaging, marketing, distribution, promotion, and selling of the blood thinning drug Eliquis.
Filed in California Superior Court, the Eliquis lawsuit details the specific alleged Eliquis bleeding problems experienced by each of the named plaintiffs as follows:
- Plaintiff William A. of California started ingesting Eliquis in June 2016. A month later he suffered gastrointestinal bleeding and had to be hospitalized for approximately four days.
- Plaintiff Michael L. of Kentucky began using Eliquis in June 2015. In January 2016, he suffered gastrointestinal bleeding and had to be hospitalized for approximately five days.
- Plaintiff Will D. of Arizona started using Eliquis in December 2014. A month later in January 2015, he suffered internal bleeding in both legs, his legs turned black up to his knees and had blisters; he had to be hospitalized for approximately two days.
- Plaintiff Gail S. of California began ingesting Eliquis in December 2015. In January 2016, she suffered a gastrointestinal bleeding ulcer and had to be hospitalized and undergo surgery.
- Plaintiff Omer H. of Ohio began taking Eliquis in July 2014. He suffered gastrointestinal bleeding and had to be hospitalized on December 2014.
- Plaintiff Barry M. of Ohio used Eliquis for a month beginning in October 2014. In November 2014, he had an ablation surgery and suffered excessive bleeding and the surgery was not successful.
Each of the plaintiffs similarly allege that their Eliquis bleeding problems were a direct result of the drug makers’ conduct and that they incurred damages, including medical expenses, physical pain, and mental anguish, among other damages.
Eliquis Bleeding Problems
Eliquis (apixaban) is a blood-thinning drug administered to reduce the risk of blood clots for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as people recovering from hip or knee replacement surgeries.
However, there is no commercial reversal agent available to treat Eliquis bleeding problems, which may lead to more serious and possibly harder to treat internal bleeding events than with warfarin.
With warfarin, which thins the blood by blocking Vitamin K, administering a bleeding patient Vitamin K can serve as an antidote to a severe bleeding event. There is no such antidote for Eliquis.
Warning signs and symptoms of internal bleeding may include:
- discolored urine (blood in the urine)
- red or black-colored stool
- vomiting or coughing up blood
- frequent nose bleeds or gum bleeding
- weakness and swelling in the extremities
- any other unusual bleeding
If you or a loved one suffered Eliquis bleeding problems, you may be able to file an Eliquis lawsuit and receive compensation for your losses.
