The link between Nexium and stomach cancer has been a growing cause for concern recently, particularly as more patients come forward to report issues with PPI drugs. PPI drugs are some of the most commonly used across the United States and yet they may also be linked to a serious risk.
Any serious cancer risk using a medication might prompt a patient to think twice about taking the drug to begin with, and those consumers who say they were never told about the dangers are considering the option of filing a lawsuit. Some patients have been diagnosed with stomach cancer and other critical medical conditions, a link they argue may have been tied to the use of Nexium and similar PPI drugs.
Study Links PPI Drugs Like Nexium and Stomach Cancer
The link between Nexium and stomach cancer has been explored in some research and medical studies, prompting cause for concern. The patient who ultimately discovers a connection between Nexium and stomach cancer might only realize this after it is too late when he or she has been diagnosed.
The risk associated with Nexium and stomach cancer has to do with how often and how long these PPI drugs were taken. That risk could increase anywhere from two to eight times, according to the authors of a recent study. The total risk was very small, although the relative risk seems quite high. PPI drugs are some of the most commonly used medications for treating dyspepsia and acid reflux disease.
The professor of gastroenterology at the University of Hong Kong who participated in the study said that doctors should be more mindful about prescribing long-term PPI drugs because of these possible risks of Nexium and stomach cancer.
Commonly used PPI drugs include Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid. Eliminating H. pylori, a common goal of these PPI drugs, can decrease the risk of stomach cancer. But once that bacteria have been treated, many people may still develop stomach cancer.
Although the study was not able to prove conclusively that there is a causal connection between Nexium and stomach cancer, researchers did identify an association. Any patients who have a past H. pylori infection should be mindful of the possible link between Nexium and stomach cancer, and be cautious about long-term use of PPIs.
Many patients have come forward to report serious side effects and concerns associated with the use of PPI drugs. These medications, argue consumers who have filed lawsuits in recent years, come with serious side effects that are not clear to patients who begin taking them. Drug manufacturers have a responsibility to thoroughly test and publish information about the possible dangers or side effects of a drug.
Anyone who has been already negatively impacted by Nexium and stomach cancer or any of the other reported serious side effects linked to PPI drugs should consider their possible participation in a Nexium lawsuit investigation. Legal action could help patients recover the costs of medical treatment, lost income, and other damages.
In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
