After allegedly experiencing serious hip implant complications, a Tennessee man filed a DePuy Pinnacle hip implant lawsuit. The allegations made in this DePuy Pinnacle hip implant lawsuit are similar to many other product liability claims filed against DePuy, each alleging serious metal hip implant difficulties.
Plaintiff Thomas P. and his wife Sharon P. are filing this DePuy Pinnacle hip implant lawsuit, with Thomas alleging the defective nature of the device had compounded his medical condition. Thomas claims his DePuy Pinnacle device caused him to experience inflammation, severe pain, tissue and bone loss, and metallosis.
According to the DePuy Pinnacle hip implant lawsuit, Thomas underwent total right hip replacement surgery on Feb. 23, 2011. Soon after the surgery, Thomas reported experiencing explain pain and discomfort from basic movements.
Diagnostic testing revealed severe inflammation around the implant site, along with elevated blood metal ion levels. This indicates metallosis, which occurs due to the ball and socket joint interacting and shedding metal ions into the bloodstream.
These metal hip implant complications allegedly forced Thomas to undergo revision surgery to remove the device on Aug. 29, 2016. Thomas will also request at least one additional surgery to replace the Pinnacle Device, so he can regain mobility.
Thomas and Sharon opted to file this DePuy Pinnacle hip implant lawsuit, alleging the company knew of the defective nature of their metal hip implants.
Overview of DePuy Pinnacle Metal Hip Implant Complications
The DePuy Pinnacle device is a metal on metal hip implant, composed of cobalt and chromium based metals. Like other all-metal hip implants, the DePuy Pinnacle device was marketed as a superior option to plastic or ceramic models as they were supposed to be tougher and longer lasting.
Metal hip implants are particularly popular among younger patients who live a more active lifestyle. However, many all-metal hip implant models are associated with devastating hip implant complications which often required revision surgery to fix.
As mentioned before, the ball and socket joint interactions can cause metal ions to be shed into the bloodstream. This may lead to metallosis, which drastically raises the chances of device failure and infection. Even though these metal hip implant complications can be dangerous to patients, DePuy Orthopaedics failed to disclose this information to the public.
Thomas alleges DePuy either knew or should have known about these metal hip implant complications, with his hip implant lawsuit pointing out the fact that the FDA had received 1,300 injury reports regarding the DePuy Pinnacle device.
Thomas states that he never would have opted for the DePuy Pinnacle device if he had known of the potential metal hip implant complications.
This DePuy Pinnacle Hip Implant Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-01346-K, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Northern Texas, Dallas Division.
