 CyberDefender Software Class Action Lawsuit

By Mike Holer

CyberDefender Registry Cleaner

A consumer class action lawsuit claims CyberDefender Corp. sells bogus software that claims to clean viruses and speed up computers, but it “cleans” bogus errors and actually makes computers slow down and crash.

To prove their claims, the plaintiffs in the CyberDefender class action lawsuit hired independent cyber security experts to investigate CyberDefender’s software Registry Cleaner and Early Detection Center. CyberDefender offers consumers a free downloadable diagnostic test of their computers before purchasing Registry Cleaner and Early Detection Center, which the experts put to the test.

According to the class action lawsuit, the independent security experts found that “after a fresh installation of Windows XP on a clean virtual PC, never connected to the internet, Registry Cleaner detected over 151 errors on the pristine PC.” After the software removed the so-called errors identified in the scan, scans conducted during the next 24 hours did not display registry errors, even though registry errors were created during that period.

Furthermore, the CyberDefender class action lawsuit says, “some consumers have reported that CyberDefender software actually slows down their PC, which can cause crashes and attendant loss of data.” Furthermore, the class action says, CyberDefender offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if, for any reason, a customer is not completely satisfied, but it does not honor this promise.

“Despite CyberDefender’s express refund policies, CyberDefender’s telephone representatives have failed to process a material number of refund requests. Plaintiffs are informed and believe that inadequately supervised telephone representative have intermittently told customers that their money is being refunded yet never actually processed the refund, placed consumers on hold for extended periods, told customers that another representative sill send them an email that was not in fact sent, refused to allow the customer to speak with a supervisor, failed to process the full amount of the refund, and provided inaccurate information in connection with refund requests.”

The proposed CyberDefender class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of anyone in the United States and its territories who have purchased a CyberDefender product or service. It is seeking class certification, damages and injunctive relief for breach of express warranties and contract, violations of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law, and more.

I thought that it was a free cleaning of my computer and was duped into buying this. I was also promised a $50. gas card as well as a $25. Walmart card that reduce my price by $75. when I balked at the price of their services. Both of which I did not receive, as well as having problems with my computer freezing up and crashing, also being slower. I called and complained, but no results.

I thought it was interesting when I contacted CyberDefender customer support to help with a virus on my computer and while the tech had control he did not use his own software but Malwarebytes.

I, too, would like to add my name to this lawsuit. I paid $64.97 last year and got nothing for it, except some worthless rebate. I was told my account was canceled, but today I received an e-mail saying it would renew on the 14th. I will probably be billed another $64.97. If necessary I will cancel my credit card.
I also received an email from Cyberdefender about this lawsuit. I found it suspicious. I will try to make it available to anyone who wants to see it, along with the other documents I’ve received from them.

Hello, I am a former PC technician for Cyberdefender and would like to support this lawsuit. I was so stressed and unhappy working there. But, I was honest and did my job of keeping Cyberdefender afloat along with the other technicians. However, after 6 months of working there, I will testify their software is not competent and is just a scam to get customers to buy tech support. We did good work on our end as techs, but the company as a whole is a joke and a scam. They are dishonest, greedy, and unfair to people, even their own staff. This message goes out to everyone who I worked with and was put through so much stress.

I also Have purchased this software about 3 months ago. Since having it installed, my PC’s performance has gotten worse. It locks up, freezes and crashes. I could not get my money back and was constantly told that another representitive or technical support would help me and then i would be disconnected. I would like to join this lawsuit.

I too was duped by CyberDefender as it was susposed to be freeware. I was having trouble with my nearly new PC and was searching for help and came across registry cleaner free download and being not so savy to the business of “free downloads” proceeded to use it. After the scan brought up over 300 errors I clicked the fix button only to find out I had to pay for the fix. Being desperate and naive I did pay and discovered that my pc ran worse afterwards. I did a system restore before using the product. Of course the restore did not cure the what registry cleaner did to my system and I was unable to resolve the issue through customer support nor get my money back. I too would like to join the lawsuit.

Hello. I have personally been affected by the claims presented in this class action case. In 2007 I purchased software for $39.00 and after purchasing I was instructed to contact the activation department to activate my subscription. Once I called I was tricked into paying $457 for so-called extra services, which I later found out were provided at free-of-charge. Each year I have been billed repeatedly and even though I attempt to cancel the payment goes though because the bank says it is a recurring debit. I would like to be in on the lawsuit to get my money back.
