olympic-peeling-paintMixed online reviews show Olympic Rescue It! Resurfacer may not perform as promised, leaving consumers on the hook for replacement or repair of their wood and concrete surfaces.

According to Olympic’s website, Olympic Rescue It is a compound used to resurface worn concrete or wood surfaces. the combination paint and stain product is also designed to fill cracks up to one-quarter inch.

The company’s website states the Olympic Rescue It Resurfacer provides waterproofing protection and leaves the surface with a “barefoot friendly, finely textured, slip-resistant finish.” The resulting surface is described as “durable” and is purportedly resistant to fading and mildew. Olympic promotes Rescue It as an alternative to replacing old wood or concrete.

Olympic Rescue It! Problems

Online reviews of the Olympic stain are mixed, and the more negative reviews report that the product did not perform as the reviewer expected.

Some purchasers report that far from giving new life to an old surface, Rescue It peeled off and made a huge mess after just a few months, sometimes not even lasting a single season. Many report having to remove Rescue It and redo their deck with a different product, or just replacing the deck altogether.

One might suspect bad results like these could be caused by improper preparation of the surface, but in review after review, consumers detail the preparation steps they took exactly as instructed by Olympic.

And not all reviewers are “do-it-yourselfers” – some are professional contractors with knowledge of products like Rescue It and experience in applying them properly.

Consumers Seek Compensation for Olympic Stain

Olympic offers a limited warranty for Rescue It as long as it is applied to “a properly prepared surface in accordance with label directions.” The warranty is limited to either a replacement product or the purchase price.

Olympic’s warranty does not offer compensation for the cost of redoing an unsuccessful application of Rescue It, nor does it cover the cost of the time and labor involved in the original unsuccessful application.

Some consumers who have confronted the manufacturer directly report being offered a few hundred dollars in compensation while being asked to sign away their right to bring an Olympic Rescue It lawsuit. Many express frustration at not being compensated for the time and effort they expended in using a product that ultimately failed them.

Instructions for preparation and application for both wood and concrete surfaces are fairly time consuming; the company’s published instructions run four pages long for each type of surface.

Preparation may involve sanding, broom cleaning, washing with another Olympic product made for cleaning decks, and filling cracks with caulk or patching compound.

Application instructions are similarly specific, requiring a heavily-saturated roller and particular strokes with a brush. The instructions advise not to apply to hot surfaces or direct sunlight but also to apply only when there is no threat of rain for 24 hours.

Olympic is a brand controlled by Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries, an international producer of architectural and construction products. PPG Industries is ranked 190 in the Fortune 500. Its total net sales for 2014 were $15.4 billion.

PPG Industries’ subsidiary, PPG Architectural Coatings, controls Olympic and several other common brands of finishes and paints such as Glidden, Liquid Nails and Pittsburgh Paints.
