Thousands of women have reported that they have suffered from complications from Essure, a popular birth control device, and were not properly warned before they had the device implanted.
Many of these women have banded together and have shared their stories on the Essure Problems website that was founded by a woman who went on to take legal action against the manufacturer.
Essure is currently the only non-surgical form of permanent birth control available to women. Essure is an attractive alternative to traditional tubal ligation surgeries for women who are looking for permanent sterilization once they decide that they do not want to have any children in the future.
The Essure device consists of two small metal coils that are implanted into the woman during a physician’s office visit. The coils are inserted through the woman’s vagina and are placed in the fallopian tubes. Over a period of approximately three months, the body mounts an inflammatory response to the coils which causes scar tissue to form and completely seals off the fallopian tubes.
With the fallopian tubes completely blocked, sperm cannot reach the egg for fertilization, and pregnancy is prevented. For many women, this relatively easy procedure with little to no downtime is a highly attractive alternative to surgery which requires a hospital stay and physical restrictions during the postoperative healing period.
Complications from Essure
Unfortunately, complications from Essure are not uncommon. Many of the women who have dealt with complications from Essure feel they did not receive enough information from their physician to be fully informed of all of the potential issues that they could face following the procedure. Women have reported the following complications from Essure:
- Unintended pregnancy
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Death of the fetus during pregnancy
- Heavy bleeding and painful periods
- Severe pelvic pain
- Autoimmune conditions
- Pain during intercourse
- Migraines and severe headaches
- Hormonal disruption
Some women have had such severe complications from Essure that they have attempted to have the device removed. However, this is problematic, as the device was intended to be permanently implanted. Only a few doctors across the United States will even entertain the idea of removing Essure once it has been placed.
Many women are forced to undergo partial or full of hysterectomies in order to get any kind of symptom relief following complications from Essure. The hysterectomy can then cause women to experience premature menopause, a condition which causes its own set of problems.
Despite numerous FDA adverse event reports, Essure has not been removed from the U.S. market, though many patients in advocacy organizations are fighting for its removal. The FDA did convene to discuss the safety of Essure, and it was determined that further research is required to ensure the safety of consumers.
Have You Suffered Complications from Essure?
If you have suffered complications from Essure, you may be eligible to take legal action against the device manufacturer in order to receive compensation for your injuries. Plaintiffs who file successful claims against the maker of Essure may be eligible to receive legal compensation to cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of spousal companionship, and more.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
