Zithromax (Azithromycin) is one of the country’s most popular antibiotics, but has been associated with a number of serious side effects.
One of the most recent of these concerns has been Zithromax kidney side effects, with patients alleging the drug had caused chronic damage.
This is concerning, as kidney failure can be fatal unless a transplant can readily be available.
Azithromycin was approved by the FDA in 1992, and has since been approved to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Compared to traditional antibiotics, Zithromax works by inhibiting the reproductive abilities of the bacterial cells and containing the infection site.
Since its release, Zithromax has become extremely popular amongst parents and children due to its shorter prescription period.
However the popularity of Zithromax does not make its manufacturing company, Pfizer, immune to the legal woes of negligence.
Overview of Zithromax Kidney Side Effects
There are a number of other complications that come with Zithromax kidney side effects including blood urea nitrogen, interstitial nephritis, and high levels of serum creatinine.
Patients who exhibit interstitial nephritis, or kidney inflammation, can typically predict kidney failure unless the condition is treated. It is important to note that nephritis may cause the patient’s urination patterns to change, and will cause nausea and fatigue once the condition occurs.
The issue, however, is each of these Zithromax kidney side effects can result in complete kidney failure, which can be fatal without dialysis and can only be treated with a new kidney.
Early stages of this condition can be reversed if diagnosed early enough, so patients should be vigilant for any signs of Zithromax kidney side effects.
A recent study had noticed that there were a number of acute kidney failure cases in Zithromax patients who were over 60 years old and also taking Aspirin.
This patient group had been taking the drug for less than one month and had been HIV positive while experiencing these Zithromax kidney side effects.
The study consisted of 11,000 Azithromycin patients, with 252 (2.35%) of them developing kidney failure. Kidney failure occurs when they can no longer filtrate waste from the blood, and cannot regulate the levels of water in the body.
Patients who experience Zithromax kidney side effects should be cognizant of fever, nausea, stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea, dark colored urine, jaundice, clay colored stools, and bleeding from nose or gums.
Zithromax patients should be vigilant of any abnormal side effects, and report to their doctor immediately if they have any concerns.
Patients who may have suffered Zithromax kidney side effects and needed a kidney transplant may be eligible for legal action, and should consult a specialized lawyer.
