A new class action lawsuit accuses Walmart of selling Great Value shrimp that is underweight.
According to the lawsuit, Walmartโs Great Value shrimp products contain less shrimp than stated on the packaging, leaving customers to pay for ice instead of seafood.
Plaintiff Elijah Baptist filed the class action lawsuit against Walmart on Oct. 8 in Illinois state court, alleging violations of state consumer laws.
Baptist claims he bought several bags of Great Value shrimp from Walmart over the past three years, relying on the labels that promised a certain weight of shrimp. However, he says he later discovered that the bags were underweight, with some containing as much as 11% less shrimp than advertised.
He argues Walmartโs failure to provide the stated amount of frozen shrimp in its Great Value products is an unfair, deceptive and/or fraudulent business practice and a breach of express and implied warranties.
Walmart class action: FDA guidelines prohibit including ice glaze in product weight
The Walmart class action lawsuit alleges that Great Value shrimp products are coated with an ice glaze to protect them from freezer burn, a common practice in the seafood industry. However, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, the weight of the glaze cannot be included in the net weight of the product.
Baptist claims Walmartโs Great Value shrimp products do not meet this standard, as they weigh less than the stated amount once thawed and drained.
He says he bought the shrimp for a seafood party he hosted in June 2026 and would not have purchased the shrimp or paid as much for it if he had known it was underweight.
The class action lawsuit seeks to represent all Illinois consumers who bought Walmartโs Great Value shrimp products. Baptist is demanding a jury trial and is requesting damages, restitution and injunctive relief.
In another Great Value class action lawsuit, a consumer has claimed Walmartโs Great Value Organic Chia Seeds contain eight times the allowable level of mold.
