citizens-jeans-usaCitizens of Humanity, a designer jean brand, has been targeted in a “Made in the USA” class action lawsuit.

Clothing that includes a “Made in the USA” label can indicate many things to American consumers.

To some, the label means that the clothes are inherently of higher and more trustworthy quality. To others, the label means that they are supporting the U.S. economy.

Some believe that a “Made in the USA” label is the surest way to avoid supporting cheap and abusive or unfair labor practices in other countries.

To most, a “Made in the USA” label signifies that the products are made entirely in the USA with USA-made parts and labor. However, this is not necessarily the case, as recent Citizens of Humanity class action lawsuits have made abundantly clear.

Made in the USA Labeling

A “Made in the USA” label carries with it a great deal of meaning for most Americans, which is why manufacturers have begun to use the label as part of their marketing; they hope that these products will sell better with the label than without. Some manufacturers, however, have used the label falsely, which has sparked “Made in the USA” lawsuits across the country.

California in particular has strict laws on this issue. California prohibits products from featuring a Made in the USA label if its components are not all American made. Federal law is more lax, asserting that “virtually all” of a product’s components should come from the U.S. in order to deserve the Made in the USA label.

Citizens of Humanity Lawsuits

Citizens of Humanity lawsuits were filed in the San Diego federal court in June.

Some Citizens of Humanity buyers believe that part of the value of the jeans is in the “Made in the USA” label – their parts and their labor, American made, contribute to a consumer’s willingness to buy.

These consumers justify the designer brand’s prices on what they believe the “Made in USA” label to mean, including better quality materials and support of U.S. jobs and economy.

According to some consumers, if foreign components or labor are involved, Citizens of Humanity jeans are no longer worth the high prices. A single pair of women’s Citizens of Humanity jeans can reach up to $258.

Some concerned consumers have responded to these issues by filing Citizens of Humanity lawsuits in order to gain some compensation for the product value lost, as well as the company’s alleged deception in its “Made in the USA” labeling. Several other companies have been the targets of ‘Made in the USA’ lawsuits as well.

The American consumers involved in these “Made in the USA” lawsuits believe that companies should be transparent about where their clothing comes from and how it is made, and falsely labeling clothes with deceptive “Made in the USA” labels does nothing to help with this necessary transparency.

If you or someone you know has purchased a Citizens of Humanity product in the last few years, you may be able to join a Citizens of Humanity lawsuit.
