The Environmental Working Group performed a test that found different crayon brands as well as in fingerprinting kits had asbestps. Asbestos has caused thousands of individuals to develop deadly lung cancer or mesothelioma. While only trace amounts of asbestos were found in the toys, the EWG suggested that it was enough to increase the risk of a child developing asbestos lung cancer.

The group looked at 28 brands of crayons and 21 crime scene fingerprint kits. After the laboratory results returned, four of the crayon brands and two of the fingerprinting kits were found to have asbestos.

The brands that may increase a child’s risk of developing asbestos lung cancer and mesothelioma are the following:

  • Amscan Crayons
  • Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Crayons
  • Saban’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce Crayons
  • Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Crayons
  • EduScience Deluxe Forensics Lab Kit
  • Inside Intelligence Secret Spy Kit

Dr. Philip Landrigan, a former senior adviser to the Environmental Protection Agency as a medical professor at Mount Sinai Hospital, stated, “Clearly, some toy manufacturers haven’t done enough to protect children and others from asbestos in consumer products. Therefore, it’s high time the federal government bans asbestos in consumer products.”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission claimed in 2000 that the asbestos found in these children’s products did not greatly increase the risk of asbestos lung cancer and mesothelioma, but there was still a risk if the child inhaled the asbestos fibers.

Asbestos Lung Cancer Lawsuit

Thousands of asbestos lung cancer lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers that created products that contained asbestos. Asbestos has been used in countless products for decades. while asbestos use has greatly decreased, many people are still being diagnosed with asbestos lung cancer.

Asbestos has the ability to remain undetected in the lungs for years. Some people developed lung cancer or mesothelioma decades after initial exposure. It was estimated that 15,000 individuals die every year from complications caused by asbestos.

As a result, many have chosen to file asbestos lung cancer lawsuits. Plaintiffs may win compensation for failure to warn, negligence and many other damages. Compensation may be awarded to help pay for any medical bills, pain and suffering, loss of quality of life, and more. A wrongful death lawsuit may be filed by the family members of someone who died from asbestos caused disease.

The EWG called for an absolute ban on asbestos claiming that the risk of developing mesothelioma or lung cancer is simply too great.
