In a new lawsuit, a cancer patient claims that Monsanto’s weed killer Roundup has been associated with several glyphosate dangers.
The plaintiff, Thomas R., says he used Roundup weekly for years while maintaining his residential property. He alleges he used Roundup for a period of about six years, from 1986 to 1992. He chose Roundup because he knew it to be a popular option and believed it to be both a safe and effective weed killer.
Unfortunately, Thomas was diagnosed with Stage IV non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2008, though he says he has no family history of this disease. He underwent chemotherapy for a 10-month period, which led to congestive heart failure. He has since been dependent on a pacemaker.
Thomas alleges that he used Roundup as directed, but that the glyphosate dangers associated with the product were far greater than he and many other consumers new. Thomas claims in his lawsuit that his diagnosis with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was a direct result of his Roundup use over the years. On top of the obvious physical injuries suffered, Thomas has also been hit with medical expenses, economic hardship, and other financial burdens.
Although he was diagnosed back in 2008, Thomas says he didn’t become aware of the risk of cancer from using Roundup until after reading the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s evaluation of glyphosate dangers was published in 2015.
Thomas’s lawsuit over glyphosate dangers was filed on Nov. 28, 2017, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The lawsuit alleges multiple claims, including design defect, failure to warn, and negligence. Thomas’s wife Lavonne also filed one count of loss of consortium.
This lawsuit, along with others like it, alleges that Monsanto has continued to misrepresent the use of Roundup as safe, despite the possibility of serious glyphosate dangers.
Monsanto has used the taglines “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals to describe its product when the actual glyphosate dangers are much greater. The New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for making these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about very real glyphosate dangers.
Background of Roundup

Farmworkers and home gardeners are among those most at risk of any glyphosate dangers, given the common use of the product in these activities. The Environmental Protection Agency began to suspect a number of serious glyphosate dangers back in the 1980s.
