Blue Buffalo pet foodPet food maker Blue Buffalo Ltd. has been hit with two class action lawsuits accusing the company of fraudulently marketing its products as containing no chicken byproducts, corn or grain. The Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits were filed by consumers and pet food rival Nestlé Purina PetCare Co.

Illinois resident Rachel D. Stone alleges in her class action lawsuit that she purchased Blue Buffalo dog food based on representations representations that it was healthier and did not include certain ingredients. Stone says she purchased  “Life Protection” recipes because of the claim that it contained “NO Chicken/Poultry By-Product Meals,” which was featured prominently in advertisements as well as on the Blue Buffalo website. According to the Blue Buffalo pet food class action lawsuit, however, numerous investigations have indicated that those exact ingredients are in the products.

Stone says that she and other consumers paid a premium for the Blue Buffalo pet food products because they were falsely advertised as a healthier option with better quality ingredients than competing pet foods. As a result, her class action lawsuit alleges that the “representations of the ingredients and nutritional value in its pet food are false, deceptive, misleading and materially incorrect.”

Those investigations were explained in more detail in a similar class action lawsuit filed by Blue Buffalo competitor Nestlé Purina Petcare. Purina alleges that the percentage of poultry by-product is as high as 25 percent and, as such, the company alleges that Blue Buffalo “is concealing the truth about the ingredients in its products.” It also goes on to note that grains and corn are also present.

Both sets of plaintiffs are seeking an injunction requiring Blue Buffalo to modify the advertising of their products, which Purina alleges unfairly target itself and other pet food manufacturers because the commercials say that others are hiding the truth about their ingredients. Further, the company is seeking damages for violations of the Lanham Act based on unfair competition.

Consumers who would form the putative Class of Illinois or nationwide buyers of Blue Buffalo pet food products are seeking damages under violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act for the subclass and other states for the class of all buyers in the United States.

Stone is represented by class action lawyers John G. Simon, Ryan Keane and Time Cronin of the Simon Law Firm PC and Sean K. Cronin of Donovan Rose Nester PC.

The Blue Buffalo Pet Food Class Action Lawsuit is Rachel D. Stone, et al. v. The Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., Case No. 14-cv-00520, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.

The competitor’s class action lawsuit is Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. v. The Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., Case No. 14-cv-00859, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

I bought Blue Buffalo and it wasn`t cheap! My dog has had diarrhea since she started eating it. We had to take her to the vet, a $125.00. She is a 5 yrs old dachshund. She has ben vomiting and sick sick sick! She has also gained weight. The vet told us to get her some different dog food. so we did. She is doing much better. I will never buy this dog food again!!!

In April 2016 my lab became very sick from Blue. Severe diahreea. It has taken almost 1 year to have her feeling better.
Is there another law suit you might be aware of?

My family just rescued a puppy and we were confident in buying blue buffalo, but after the second day our puppy began to have constant diarrhea, Today is the third day he has had diarrhea, and we are about to switch foods because we are positive it is this brand of food thats making him sick. Our puppy didn’t want to eat the food in the beginning and we thought it was because he was in a new home but now after reading all these negative experiences. Im glad we searched for this sooner than later.

we had been feeding our 1 year old Great Dane Purina Pro Plan. My daughter thought she would buy the Blue Wilderness Wolf Creek Beef Stew and put a little on his food. He ate 1/2 can. With in 12 hours he was vomiting. With in 24 hours he was shooting blood out his rectum. We had to take him to the hospital. He was so sick he could not stand or even hold his head up. He ended up in the hospital for a week on IVs to hydrate him. He would not eat or drink. the food tore his stomach and intestines up. When he came home we had to feed him rice, ground meat and chicken for almost 2 months, and give him so may different perscriptions several times a day. We ended up with over $7000.00 in vet bills. when I filed a claim with Blue Buffalo, they told me it would take 12 weeks to review. Once they reviewed it they sent me a letter saying they rejected my claim because I don’t have prove that it absolutely was the food that caused this. I told them it seems strange that the first time we fed him Blue Wilderness that he was six with in 12 hours and almost dead within 24. They told me that their food is all inspected and of the highest quality blah, blah, blah. and how they really care about our pets. All they care about is the money. If they cared about the animals they would fess up to what their food did to our dog. $7000.00 may be a drop in the bucket to them but the $7000.00, the mental stress that they put my daughter and I through, and the HELL they put our dog through is not acceptable. Is there anything I can do?

This really makes me wonder. Shortly after starting our 3 cats on Blue Buffalo Indoor formula one of our cats had to be rushed to the vet. We found he had struvite crystals. He’s been on Royal Canin SO ever since. The other 2 have remained on the BB with no problems. I’ve recently decided to switch them all to a raw diet for many reasons (one being urinary kibble can lead to kidney issues). The biggest is that ALL cats, big and small, eat raw food. But this is really making me wonder.

  6. Rhonda says:

We almost lost one of our Yorkies (which are our babies) because of this dog food. I will never ever say anything good about this dog food. Big vet bill and also the money I spent on this sucky dog food that made my baby sick.

  7. Pam Porst says:

What is being done to bb, because their food has made puppy’s, dogs, kitty’s and cats deathly ill. Mine is one of them. Is their a class action law suit for this?

  8. Beth Lane says:

Have feed my 4 dogs BB for several years because the oldest had gained too much weight . Thought she would loose weight on grain free diet, but she has continued weight gain to point she can barely walk. This company should be out of business for falsely advertising no grains.I live with less to make sure I can feed them & take good care of them. They shouldn’t have to suffer. I also have 2 dogs that have seizures. Is this caused from BB?

  9. Jennifer Wright says:

I was lead to believe that Blue Buffalo was the best choice for healthy food for my animals and fed it to my 2 cats and dog. After about 3 months on this food one of my cats started having problems urinating. I had to take him to the vet immediately. He had a blockage and had to be catheterized. The vet said he had crystals in his urinary tract and if I hadn’t brought him in when I did he would have died. The next day my other cat started having the same issue and had to be taken to the vet. The vet told me they had seen the same issues with several other animals on Blue Buffalo food. After a $2500 vet bill and several days in the animal hospital i was able to bring my cats home. They are now on a prescription food for life thanks to Blue Buffalo.

    1. Sherry says:

how do we get the info to join the class action lawsuit. I am afraid that my bull mastiff is going through some serious issues since we slowly changed over from Orijen…..We followed the vets direction and over the least 4 months have slowly used less of the Orijen and more of the BB…..he now has diarrhea and is vomitting. It is to the point that I cannot be in the same room as him because he is now VERY gassy
