Pet food maker Blue Buffalo Ltd. has been hit with two class action lawsuits accusing the company of fraudulently marketing its products as containing no chicken byproducts, corn or grain. The Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits were filed by consumers and pet food rival Nestlé Purina PetCare Co.
Illinois resident Rachel D. Stone alleges in her class action lawsuit that she purchased Blue Buffalo dog food based on representations representations that it was healthier and did not include certain ingredients. Stone says she purchased “Life Protection” recipes because of the claim that it contained “NO Chicken/Poultry By-Product Meals,” which was featured prominently in advertisements as well as on the Blue Buffalo website. According to the Blue Buffalo pet food class action lawsuit, however, numerous investigations have indicated that those exact ingredients are in the products.
Stone says that she and other consumers paid a premium for the Blue Buffalo pet food products because they were falsely advertised as a healthier option with better quality ingredients than competing pet foods. As a result, her class action lawsuit alleges that the “representations of the ingredients and nutritional value in its pet food are false, deceptive, misleading and materially incorrect.”
Those investigations were explained in more detail in a similar class action lawsuit filed by Blue Buffalo competitor Nestlé Purina Petcare. Purina alleges that the percentage of poultry by-product is as high as 25 percent and, as such, the company alleges that Blue Buffalo “is concealing the truth about the ingredients in its products.” It also goes on to note that grains and corn are also present.
Both sets of plaintiffs are seeking an injunction requiring Blue Buffalo to modify the advertising of their products, which Purina alleges unfairly target itself and other pet food manufacturers because the commercials say that others are hiding the truth about their ingredients. Further, the company is seeking damages for violations of the Lanham Act based on unfair competition.
Consumers who would form the putative Class of Illinois or nationwide buyers of Blue Buffalo pet food products are seeking damages under violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act for the subclass and other states for the class of all buyers in the United States.

The Blue Buffalo Pet Food Class Action Lawsuit is Rachel D. Stone, et al. v. The Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., Case No. 14-cv-00520, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
The competitor’s class action lawsuit is Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. v. The Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., Case No. 14-cv-00859, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
UPDATE: Blue Buffalo has announced that it will pay $32 million to settle the pet food class action lawsuits.

My dogs have been on Blue Buffalo for several years. One as a pup, one that I adopted at the age of 4 with sensitive stomach and constant diarrhea. I have fed the Wilderness Salmon Formula. I have absolutely no complaints about the food. My dogs have done very well on it. Am I happy about the by-product? NO. We have been feeding all 4 of our extra large dogs Blue sweet potato & fish. They love it. Their fur is healthy & shiny. Seems like now-a- days you cant trust anyone/any company. We use to feed our dogs diamond. They didn’t like it. There was always food left in their bowl. That never happens with Rottweilers & Labs. Then the plastic in the food issue happened. I wont use diamond.. Diamond makes Costco Kirkland brand dog food, so I cant buy Kirkland. Someone today told me Diamond makes Blue. I don’t think so. If that’s the case. Ill just start feeding our dogs food from the garden & meat from the butcher. Our dogs still love their Blue. I hope that this info is false, cause if it is true, I will not be buying anymore blue…
I have been feeding my dog their Salmon & Sweet Potato food for going on 4 years now. GREAT results. NO problems. My dog has a pretty severe skin condition that makes him itchy all the time with greasy fur and a bad odor. It has gotten so bad in the past, that he had skin infections, self-inflicted bite and scratch wounds and multiple ear infections. Over the years (he is almost 11), I have tried various dog foods to see if any improvement is made. I compared all dog foods on the shelf 4 years ago. Blue Buffalo Salmon and Sweet Potato had the highest Omega 3/Omega 6 levels, so I bought it to see if it could make a difference. Guess what? It did! I have had him on this food for years with no ill results and nothing like what is described here. He still has his allergies and is on constant medication, but his skin/coat has markedly improved with less greasiness and odor. 100% satisfied. I have recommended this food to others at the pet stores and to my vet.
Hello, I have had the same results and my dog has skin conditions with odors too. I am not sure if they are hiding grain, but I have to assume not as my lab is severely allergic and gets massive hot spots. We fed her this for quite some time with no issues except there was no a high enough fiber content for her.

I had the same issues with my German Shepherd for about 3 months. Finally, I switched his dog food and he has been doing much better.
What food did you switch him too? My pitbull pup is having complications now. He has been eating Blue Buffalo since I got him. I got him when he was 1 month old, he is 6 months old now. Please help.
We switched our dog to BB believing it to be healthier for him. He’s recently had multiple vet visits for vomiting and diarrhea. We’ve learned it was caused by his food. I’d like to file as part of thos class action suit. Does anyone know if it’s possible to join on and if so how? Do you have to live in Illinois?
I have been feeding all 3 of my dogs Blue Buffalo since they were puppies. My oldest is going on 4 years old. I thought I was giving my pets the best. What have I been feeding them? I feel betrayed and lied to so what do I feed them and what company can I trust? I believe that I will be making my own dog food. If anybody has any good recipes let me know. My 9 months old Persian has only eaten Wellness cat food since birth. 3 weeks ago I decided to try Blue Buffalo as my pet store was out of Wellness dry that day.
Today, 10/10/14, I had to rush my kitten to the Vet, who indicated my kitten has a blockage, swollen kidneys and could possibly die. So he now has multiple i.v’s, a catheter and on pain medications all due to eating bad cat food that claimed to be ultra healthy ! I hope you can sleep at night Blue Buffalo, some things in life are more important that the All Mighty Buck !
My kitty has been eating BB for only 4 weeks and now he’s have a 3 night stay at the vet’s for crystals in his bladder. He’s 10 years old and has never had any issues with his bladder, kidneys, urethra, etc.

I bought blue buffalo for my 3 pound Yorkie because of the claims it’s the healthy choice with no fillers blah blah blah!! My poor baby has been to the vet 3 times in 2 months for extreme diarreah and vomiting. I have switched her food now & already seen improvement in overall health.
