Air France Premium Economy Reviews Give Seats Poor Grade

According to an airline class action lawsuit filed in March 2018, Air France Premium Economy reviews from travelers give seats in this class a very poor grade.

What is Premium Economy Class?

Premium Economy class is the creation of major airline carriers responding to stated preferences from travelers—particularly those undertaking a long flight from the U.S. to Europe—to have seating with more leg room and a greater ability to recline than what is offered in traditional economy coach.

Air France Premium Economy reviews indicate that there is a huge discrepancy between how this class is presented in advertising and what is delivered in actuality. The Air France Premium Economy reviews state that while the airline presents these seats as having 40 percent more room than coach, in reality, the differences vary by a modest two to six inches at best.

Actual Measurements

As indicated in Hakimi’s Air France class action lawsuit, the actual width measurement of a standard economy seat is 17 inches and the pitch of the seat—the space between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front of it—is around 32 inches.

Air France Premium Economy reviews and the narrative of the lawsuit say that seats in this specialized class add no more than two inches in width and four inches in pitch making the advertising grossly overstated and deceptive in nature.

As quoted by Hakimi, Air France promotes its Premium Economy class as follows: “Since 2009, the Premium Economy cabin has been offering customers a new more comfortable way of traveling for business or pleasure at affordable prices, in a separate cabin. The seat offers 40 percent more space than economy class and has won over close to 2.5 million customers since its launch.”

Among additional Air France Premium Economy reviews is the analysis of a travel writer for online website The Points Guy. This analysis seems to echo the general failing grade that Air France gets when it comes to these seats. The writer said that the seats were very underpadded and what was there was worn down so that its plastic lining could be felt.

Additionally, the travel writer said the seats had a different kind of makeup in which in a fully-reclined state, they may collapse in on themselves. This design was unbelievably uncomfortable, the writer says.
