Some owners of GMC Sierra pickups claim that the trucks’ dim headlights make driving at night unsafe.
2014 and 2015 GMC Sierra trucks may be affected by the dim headlights issue. The trucks were allegedly sold with headlights that are too dim, making it less safe for drivers at night, increasing their risk of an accident.
Some truck owners say that they have begun purposely avoiding night driving to stay safe, while others have even spent money to buy replacement headlights. A growing number of GMC Sierra owners are filing complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the dim headlights issue.
The GMC Sierra Dim Headlights Defect
GMC Sierras used to be sold with a double-headlight system. But starting in 2014, these trucks were sold with a single-bulb Bi-Halogen headlight. Instead of using two bulbs, a shutter is used to cut off part of the light for low beams, and when the high beams are in use, the shutter moves out of the way for more light to stream through.
But GMC Sierra customers claim that this single-bulb system lacks the necessary light for drivers to be truly safe while driving at night, the dim headlights not allowing them to most effectively see signs and obstacles. Driving outside of the city where there may not be as many streetlights, such as in mountain roads or in rural areas, pose even more of a risk, some say.
“The headlights are so dim the truck is dangerous to drive at night,” said one 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 owner in a complaint. “I drove in a snow storm last night and I couldn’t see ahead of me.”
Another GMC Sierra owner wrote that even though he brought his truck to the dealership for a replacement bulb and recalibration, he “still will not drive the truck at night as it is still unsafe.”
California Plaintiffs File GMC Sierra Dim Headlights Lawsuit
A 2015 lawsuit filed by two California residents against GMC alleges that the trucks’ dim headlights are unsafe. One plaintiff, Armando B., purchased his 2015 GMC Sierra in August 2013. Unfortunately, he claims, he soon thereafter began experiencing problems with the truck’s headlight system. Though he has brought the truck in to the dealership for repair, but the lighting problem has not yet been corrected. In a further attempt to fix the dim headlights, Armando purchased a new headlight assembly.
The other plaintiff, Guillermo R., alleges that his 2014 GMC Sierra also experienced problems with dim headlights. He, too, has brought the truck into a dealership for repair but found it to be unsuccessful. He traded the 2014 truck in for a 2015 one, believing the problem with the dim headlights must be fixed. However, after just a few months, it became clear to Guillermo that the same defect was at work in the 2015 truck.
Plaintiffs are asking the court for monetary damages, as well as an order that General Motors recall the trucks involved with the dim headlights defect.
