Risperdal-personal-injuryIn the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania, the seventh of many trials is currently underway in the ongoing Risperdal gynecomastia litigation at the state court level. Nationwide, more than 5,000 claims have been filed over this drug.

In this particular Risperdal lawsuit, the plaintiff was prescribed Risperdal to treat behavioral problems linked with his diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome, a condition that is now part of Autism Spectrum Disorder based on current classification.

The plaintiff began taking Risperdal in 2002 when he was eight years old at the time. The complaint notes that at that time, Risperdal was not approved to treat any conditions in the pediatric population.

The Risperdal lawsuit states that the plaintiff’s mother was not adequately warned regarding the link between Risperdal and gynecomastia, nor about the development of female-like breasts. She stated that had she been properly warned, she would never have chosen to give this medication to her son.

One attorney from a law firm that is representing plaintiffs with similar Risperdal gynecomastia litigation cases pending against the manufactures of Risperdal, told Yahoo News: “So far, four of six Risperdal trials have resulted in financial damage awards for gynecomastia plaintiffs in Pennsylvania. Our firm is representing numerous individuals who are alleged to have experienced similar complications after taking this medication, and we are monitoring this trial closely.”

Risperdal and Gynecomastia

Risperdal is an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and symptoms related to difficult behaviors seen in autism spectrum disorder.

It is believed that Risperdal alters the levels of prolactin in a patient’s body. Males typically do have levels of prolactin circulating in their body naturally, but these levels are typically quite low.

In males who have taken Risperdal, prolactin levels may increase and can cause breast development as well as other issues such as breast and nipple pain, nipple discharge, milk production and more.

As one can imagine, not only is a patient affected by this physically, but the emotional turmoil in response to growing breasts as a male can be devastating

Boys and men who use Risperdal may develop breasts like those of a female, and can experience breast growth up to a size D cup in some cases.

Stopping Risperdal may not be enough to reverse male breast growth, and boys and men who are dealing with gynecomastia sometimes have to have their breasts surgically removed after stopping the medication.

Taking Steps Toward Your Own Risperdal Gynecomastia Litigation

If you or a loved one has developed gynecomastia after having taken Risperdal, you may be eligible to seek legal compensation as a result of your injuries.

Plaintiffs who file Risperdal gynecomastia litigation against the manufacturers attempt to recover economic and noneconomic damages in order to pay for past and future medical expenses, compensate for pain and suffering and more.
