clomidA new Clomid class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to examine the allegations that Clomid, an infertility treatment, has caused many children to be born with serious birth defects. Clomid is one of several medications under investigation for birth defect side effects.

Clomid is used by many women to encourage ovulation. Patients are warned that this infertility drug should only be used for a short period of time. Though Clomid has helped many become pregnant, it has also put children at risk of being born with Clomid birth defects, including:

  • Anencephaly (a baby born without parts of brain and skull)
  • Coarctation of the aorta (the narrowing of the aorta)
  • Craniosyntosis (the premature fusion of an infant’s skull sutures)
  • Esophageal atresia (a baby born without part of the esophagus)
  • Omphalocele (a baby’s abdominal organs are outside of the body)
  • Septal heart defect (a hole in the wall of the heart)

Clomid also allegedly prevents the growth of new blood vessels which can lead to serious complications for the fetus.

Birth specialists have claimed that the timing of use for Clomid as infertility treatment is essential. It is possible for a mother to use it to aid in conception and have it leave the system before the drug can negatively affect a child and giving said child a permanent Clomid birth defect. A Clomid side effects study suggested that women who use Clomid and are not properly monitored are significantly more likely to give birth to a baby with a Clomid birth defect.

Clomid can be given as a prescription, but many have chosen to buy the infertility treatment online due to the high prices of infertility treatments. This easily leads to an increased risk of improper monitoring and thus an increased risk of Clomid birth defects.

Clomid Birth Defects

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) examined a study that focused on the apparent connection between Clomid and birth defects. According to this Clomid study, an increase in birth defects was found in children who mothers used Clomid for infertility. The CDC found birth defects involving the heart, skull, and other parts of the body.

The CDC noted that the study’s findings were slightly limited due to the number of women, but the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has also strongly warned against Clomid use in pregnant women. The FDA categorized Clomid as a Category X medication, meaning, “the risks involved in the use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.”

The Clomid birth defects study suggested that women who use Clomid unmonitored have a 300 percent higher chance of giving birth to a child with a Clomid birth defect.

Though there are several known Clomid side effects, knowledge about Clomid birth defects is still limited.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
