major-Essure-side-effectsMany women have complained of severe side effects after being implanted with the Essure implant device for long term birth control.

The severe side effects regarding the Essure implant birth control device center around the design of the medical device. It has been linked to thousands of adverse events reports that often include device migration, organ perforation and excessive bleeding.

The Essure implant is made by Bayer HealthCare and has been promoted as a safe and effective, permanent, non-surgical form of birth control.

It was considered a cutting-edge device because it didn’t require surgery, yet it was a permanent form of birth control.

How Does the Essure Implant Work?

The Essure implant is a set of two flexible coils that are made of metal and polyester. They are inserted through the vagina and uterus and are implanted inside each fallopian tube.

Over time, tissues develops around the coils which blocks the fallopian tubes. In this case, the egg cannot descend where it would be met with the sperm. This process prevents conception.

Three months after the Essure implant is inserted, a doctor must examine the patient to determine whether or not she may still be fertile.

But patients and the medical community have come out recently in opposition to the Essure implant because adverse event reports include the following complications:

  • Migration
  • Perforation
  • Fractures or breakages
  • Allergic reactions
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Severe pain, bleeding or cramping
  • Ecoptic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage

In fact, in September 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration held a meeting to discuss the safety of the Essure implant because according to their records, thousands of women had filed adverse event reports. Additionally, some women planned a hunger strike outside the FDA’s Silver Spring, Maryland, headquarters to protest the device.

Essure Implant Reversal

With the high number of adverse complications in connection with the Essure implant, it is possible for doctors to remove the devices from women.

If a woman undergoes the more traditional form of permanent sterilization, tubal ligation, it is possible to surgically reverse. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, more than half the women who undergo reversal can get pregnant.

Essure implant reversal is a little more tricky. The surgeon must make small incisions and then make additional small cuts in the fallopian tubes. Each metal coil is carefully cut out with any surrounding scar tissue. Then the surgeon reconnects the fallopian tubes to the uterus. The danger lies in the fact that the uterus is more apt to rupture during pregnancy after an Essure implant reversal procedure.
