Lipitor diabetes lawsuit

A new Lipitor diabetes lawsuit has joined the legal action over the allegations that Lipitor can cause type-2 diabetes, particularly in women.

The latest Lipitor diabetes lawsuit was filed by plaintiff Linda Edwards of Georgia, and makes similar claims to the hundreds of other lawsuits Pfizer Inc. is facing over similar allegations. Edwards began taking the drug, under a doctor’s prescription, in 2005, according to her Lipitor side effects lawsuit. The decision to take the drug was informed by Pfizer’s claim that the drug is a safe way to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of developing heart disease. However, after four years of taking the drug, Edwards was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

Edwards’s Lipitor diabetes lawsuit cites several research studies to support the allegation that the drug caused her to develop type-2 diabetes. Edwards’ Lipitor diabetes lawsuit alleges that Pfizer knew, or reasonably should have known, of the risk of diabetes allegedly linked to its products. However, her Lipitor lawsuit alleges that Pfizer have actively concealed the risk of developing type-2 diabetes from the public. To support this, the lawsuit points out that when the FDA mandated changes to Lipitor’s labeling to reflect the risk of developing diabetes, Pfizer steeped the wording in jargon and never actually used the word “diabetes.” Edwards’s Lipitor diabetes lawsuit alleges that this is part of a pattern of deliberate concealment.

Edwards’ Lipitor diabetes lawsuit has joined other Lipitor diabetes lawsuits in a type of group litigation called a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. MDLs are a process of coordinating similar lawsuits into a single legal process. This is similar to a class action lawsuit. In both MDLs and class action lawsuits a group of plaintiffs allege they have suffered similar harm at the hands of the same defendants.

The individual Lipitor diabetes lawsuit is formally titled Linda Edwards v. Pfizer Inc., Case No. 1:14-cv-01132-UA, filed within the MDL In Re: Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (No. II), MDL No. 2502, U.S. District Court of Southern Carolina.

In general, Lipitor lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
