IVC blood clot filterAn inferior vena cava filter, or IVC blood clot filter, is a medical device that is implanted in patients in order to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism.

The device works by catching blood clots in the inferior vena cava vein, and preventing them from causing additional complications.

Usually, an IVC blood clot filter is installed in patients who are unable to take traditional blood thinning medication.

IVC Filter Side Effects

Ideally, the IVC blood clot filter can prevent a pulmonary embolism if the patient is at risk for this complication. But IVC filters have received much attention lately for allegations of dangerous and potentially life threatening complications that may be caused by the device.

Filter migration is one of the major side effects that have been linked to IVC filters.

Migration occurs when the IVC blood clot filter moves from its intended location. Experts believe this movement may be due to either regular breathing of the patient or aortic palpitations; both of which are normal, everyday occurrences that cannot be prevented by the patient.

When the IVC blood clot filter migrates, it may no longer be able to preform its job. Additionally, filter migration can cause damage to nearby organs, as sharp edges from the device can puncture or perforate the inferior vena cava or other nearby areas.

Other IVC filter side effects may include:

  • Tilting or loss of stability of the inferior vena cava filter which could lead to fracture, further penetration, or migration.
  • Penetration or perforation of the inferior vena cava wall which may harm nearby organs or the aorta.
  • Fracturing or embolization – detachment of device components which may become embedded in organs, tissues or arteries.

There can also be problems with implantation, which includes incomplete filter opening and filter misplacement.

FDA Issues IVC Filter Warning

The United States Food & Drug Administration has issued safety communications regarding the use of IVC filters. In 2010, their first communication recommended that doctors and patients exercise caution when using these devices, as they may create an increased risk for serious and life threatening complications.

Some of the complications mentioned were device migration, device fracture and perforation of the inferior vena cava vein. The communication also warned doctors to remove the device as soon as the risk of pulmonary embolism was eliminated.

In 2014, the FDA revised their original statement, suggesting that IVC filters be removed between the 29th and 54th day after implantation.

IVC Blood Clot Filter Lawsuits

More and more former recipients of IVC filters are coming forward with complaints of serious injuries from the implants and are filing legal claims against the makers of the allegedly defective medical devices, citing poor design and manufacturing as the reasons for their injuries.

If your inferior vena cava has been damaged by an IVC blood clot filter implantation, or if any other organs have been damaged, you may be able to file a lawsuit against the makers of your device.

An experienced dangerous medical device attorney can help you file your claim and go over your legal options with you.

In general, IVC filter lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
