hip-replacement-lawsuitA Washington D.C. resident has filed a hip replacement lawsuit claiming that Biomet failed to adequately warn him and other consumers about the risks and severity of side effects of its hip replacement system.

Biomet is the manufacturer of the second-most widely used total metal-on-metal hip implant system called the M2a Magnum hip replacement.

Plaintiff J.C. R. filed this hip replacement lawsuit against Biomet, alleging he sustained severe hip replacement complications as a direct result of Biomet’s defective manufacturing and marketing of the M2a Magnum hip implant.

J.C. received the Biomet hip in January 2005 during a right total hip replacement surgery. J.C. claims after the surgery that he suffered constant pain, swelling, tissue damage, synovial fluid buildup, lack of mobility, and metallosis (metal poisoning).

These complications forced him to undergo premature hip replacement revision surgery in June 2013 to replace the metal hip implant for his right hip, according to the hip replacement lawsuit.

The Biomet hip replacement lawsuit further alleges that Biomet failed to adequately test the impact of the metal-on-metal hip replacement system or warn about the risk that the implant may loosen or fail within a few years after surgery.

J.C. is seeking judgment for compensatory damages, pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs.

Biomet Hip Complaints

The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. Although it was promoted for active and younger patients, reported problems suggest that the artificial hip implant may be prone to fail within a few years of surgery.

While typical hip implants consist of components made of metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum has three all-metal components: a metal femoral head, metal taper insert and metal acetabulum cup.

As the metal parts rub against each other, microscopic shavings of metal may be released into the hip joint, which could cause inflammation, loosening, and other problems associated with metallosis.

Potential symptoms of Biomet Magnum hip replacement failure could include:

  • Hip pain
  • A grinding sensation in the hip region
  • Hip replacement failure preceded by an audible popping sound

Hip revisions surgery is necessary when the hip replacement system manufactured by any company has failed.

Biomet Hip Replacement Lawsuit Information

A surprising number of individuals throughout the United States have reported experiencing problems with the Biomet hip replacement, often involving loosening, dislocation, and wear or failure of the implant due to the design of the device.

Although the hip implant is expected to last more than 15 years, many individuals have required hip replacement revision surgery within a few years to replace or correct problems with Biomet M2a hip implant.

Numerous lawsuits have been filed against Biomet claiming that its M2a Magnum hip implant has caused serious injuries to patients as a result of a design defect.

Each hip replacement lawsuit seeks compensation on behalf of patients injured by the hip implants, which have been linked to metallosis and premature failure.

These lawsuits against Biomet, all of which allege damages stemming from the company’s metal-on-metal M2a Magnum Hip System, were consolidated in a multidistrict litigation action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana in 2012.
