Customers are seeking approval for a $30 million settlement that would resolve multidistrict litigation claiming that IKO Manufacturing’s roof shingles deteriorate earlier than the company says they will.

The proposed settlement was brought forward to an Illinois judge, and would end a nine year multidistrict litigation against IKO Manufacturing.

Under the terms of the IKO roofing class action settlement, homeowners who purchased the allegedly faulty shingles from IKO would receive a five-year extension on their warranty of the products.

They would also be entitled to a cash payment or replacement shingles if their previously purchased shingles fail within the extended warranty.

The shingles company and the consumers began mediation towards a settlement deal in 2016, but were unable to reach an agreement in the first several rounds of negotiations.

Expressing support for the settlement deal, the consumers’ attorneys say that the settlement “saves considerable judicial and attorney time and expense, and achieves signifiant improvements to class members’ warranty claims.”

The shingle quality MDL was brought forward in 2009 by customers who claimed that IKO’s shingles wore out long before their advertised 50 year lifespan.

Allegedly, the products came with an “iron clad” warranty. However, consumers said that the shingles could deteriorate quickly because of water damage.

Additionally, plaintiffs in the IKO roofing class action claimed that the company tried to get out of honoring its warranty by making it difficult for people to file a claim.

Consumers said that when they tried to file a claim saying that only tiles in a section of their roof had deteriorated, they were told by the company that they had to file a claim for the entire roof.

Under the proposed $30 million roofing class action settlement, a consumer who made claims that just a portion of the shingles on their roof were affected would be limited in the claims they could make for compensation.

The MDL once included as many as 19 lawsuits against IKO Manufacturing, but now includes only 15, as of a Sept. 17 report.

In 2014, the consumers and the company disputed Class certification for the shingles warranty MDL in the seventh court. As a result of this effort, the appellate court overturned the district’s judge previous ruling that denied Class certification. Now, the motion for Class certification is still reportedly pending.

On Thursday, the consumers asked the judge to allow the Class to include anyone who owned or previously owned a home or building that had IKO shingles.

This proposed Class would exclude anyone who already brought a lawsuit against the company over the shingle quality and warranty and had already received a verdict.

The Class would also exclude people who had signed a goodwill release of their claims against the company, unless the claims only applied to shingles on a portion of an entire roof.

  1. Dan Huffington says:

I just found this site, and not liking what I see. I put my IKO crap shingles on in 2012 and it has been a nightmare ever since. Wondering if I should even bother with filing a claim, doesn’t sound like they have backed their product for anyone. Probably just cut my losses and replace my roof, sad they can get away with this! Praying for a hail storm.

  2. R.E.B. says:

Put a new roof on my house in 2001 .. Used the IKO shingles as I used a loop design which was offered by the company. Like many complaints on this site my shingles have deteriorated badly on the tabs and shingles look like they have been on for 30 plus years. Unfortunate that company doesn’t stand behind their claim of longevity.. Will need to see if a settlement comes from the many who seem to have been scammed in a way.

  3. Sman Jae says:

What is the best step to take if you have the defective Cambridge shingles AND a claim AND have had shingles sent to be evaluated but IKO keeps dicking you around?

please let me know the outcome

    2. Jamie D Pladson says:

Out of all the comments I have just read I have not heard one person mention the place where they were purchased on anyone’s complaint. If you ask me it should be up to the lumberyard where everyone has purchased them to fight for us, they are also ones who profited off of us. So in my mind they gave been paid to sit and defend the people that they(owners of the lumber yards)have helped to rip off, along with helping us get our roofs fixed correctly(100% replacement) they should have to give back their share of the profit to each person that bought them shit ass shingles from.

  4. Kimberly S Yarrington says:

My widowed neighbor who is in her 90s is having her roof re shingled today. Her roofer told her she had IKO shingles and they were bad. I’ve been doing a little bit of research for her and have found that IKO has had a class action suit filed against it for YEARS and seems to go nowhere. Unfortunately, it appears my sweet neighbor will have to bare the brunt of IKO’s unethical business practices! I am so sad for her and angry beyond words at this company!

  5. Jim & Kathy Barelmann says:

We ended up finding a huge hole in our roof (after years of leaking) when replacing our IKO disintegrating shingles. We also (obviously) had water damage to the inside ceiling. Haven’t heard anything since signing up to be a part of the class action lawsuit- It’s been years

    1. Claudine Aviles says:

Hellk, who did u call about being part of the kawsuit? I just am also having alot of issues with my shingles. Was just told I need to get my entire roof re done. Thank you.

      1. Amy Ballou says:

Our shingles are all but gone on more than half of our roof. Luckily we have no leaks. House was built in 2001. We bought it in 2005. So disgusted with this company.

  6. Michelle Goodrich says:

Our shingles are delaminating also. According to all the comments above it sounds pointless to post for help. I’m hoping my name is added to the list of the many more who need help replacing their shingles.

  7. Rob Gallant says:

My roof is 17 yr old . Needs to be replaced shingles braking in half an blowing off.

  8. Brian Sheehan says:

Received a good will settlement from IKO what a joke. The amount would barely cover the removal. I don’t understand how they can still be in business. I am now going to a local attorney for advise. Going forward I will tell everyone I know not to purchase IKO products. What the heck happened in the class action? Seems like the Judge and Attorneys gave in to the case. I am very dissatisfied with the whole process.

    1. Martha Gurney says:

I just found out about the lawsuit and it’s probably too late for me to be included. I have IKO Chateau shingles on my garage. Installed about 2000. They look rotten and they are blowing off. I am so disgusted!

      1. James Maloney says:

Sorry to hear Martha, i’m experiencing the same thing also…..defective shingles all over…..looks like a whole new roof job will be needed.

    2. James Maloney says:

Sorry to hear about your issues. Do you mind if i ask what you did to receive a settlement? Was it a difficult process? Thanks

  9. Arthur S Peirce says:

Purchased IKO and installed complete roof in 2009.. the roof is blowing off today in the wind pulling through and the hurricane nailing .. the cause I can find at this point is the shingles never sealed…

    1. Regina Woods says:

      Mine too

      1. Alice Black says:

How do you sign up for the lawsuit?
        Thank you

        1. Christine Swarm says:

Did you hear back? I’m in the same situation as to how to be included in the class action.

  10. Walt says:

Product quality issues and the lack of customer service have been a consistent trademark for IKO. My problem IKO product was sold as a 30 yr shingle in 2001, by 2011 the entire roof was showing clear signs of delamination. I replaced the roof with no support from IKO. They should go out of business and stop infecting the market with crap products.
Any settlement providing their products is not to be trusted.
