androgel lawsuitsA Texas man’s testosterone gel lawsuit joins a stack of other low testosterone treatment lawsuits filed against AbbVie and Abbott Laboratories over the low-testosterone treatment AndroGel.

In his AndroGel lawsuit, plaintiff David Lyon alleges he suffered a myocardial infarction, and that the companies misled consumers into believing the product was safe.

Lyon states that before he used AndroGel, he was employed as an executive assistant to the vice president of a large corporation, according to his testosterone product lawsuit. He alleges he was active and enjoyed his job, having no intention of retiring even though he was 72. When he was prescribed testosterone replacement therapy in January 2005 for low testosterone, he was healthy and had no prior history of cardiac complications, his AndroGel  lawsuit said.

However, in November 2005 Lyon allegedly suffered a myocardial infarction that severely impacted his personal and professional life. Like most other AndroGel lawsuits, Lyon accuses AbbVie of convincing men that they are suffering from a fictional disease called “Low-T” by stating that the typical side effects of aging are actually signs of something much more dangerous conditions such as hypogonadism.

Lyon is one of the many men who allege they have suffered cardiac complications from using AndroGel, and his testosterone gel lawsuit accuses AbbVie of negligence and other product liability issues.

Overview of Low Testosterone Treatment Complications

Concern about testosterone replacement therapy including testosterone cream and testosterone gel has heightened recently as more patients have reported suffering side effects including heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January announced a review of testosterone treatment products due to reports of problems. And a mountain of testosterone gel class action lawsuits have already been filed.

A study published in the November 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggested that the side effects of testosterone treatment drugs would likely increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death among older men with certain heart problems. The medical journal PLOSOne in January concluded that testosterone treatment drugs may double the risk of heart attack for younger men with heart disease and men over the age of 65 regardless of whether they had heart conditions.

In late March, a group of plaintiffs filed a motion to centralize all AndroGel lawsuits before one federal judge as part of multidistrict litigation. Earlier this month, a motion was filed calling for all testosterone drug lawsuits to be centralized as part of one consolidated proceeding during pretrial litigation to reduce duplicative discovery and avoid conflicting rulings from different judges.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation heard oral arguments over the AndroGel lawsuit consolidation. A ruling is expected soon.
