General Motors Co. announced more GM recalls for three other vehicle flaws, including the more well known GM ignition switch recall. In addition to the millions of vehicles already recalled for the GM ignition switch defect, recalls concerning faulty hose clamps, rear axle shafts, and problematic repair parts have been issued for certain 2015 vehicles.
So far, 56 GM vehicles have been recalled for a problem with a hose clamp. This GM recall affected the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and and the 2015 GMC Sierra HD pickup truck.
An additional 152 vehicles have been part of another GM recall concerning potential problems with the rear axle shaft. Allegedly, the shaft could break while on the road, possibly causing serious problems. This GM recall involved the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC 1500 pickup truck.
The final component in this new round of GM recalls is a problem with certain vehicles that were repaired under warranty with defective parts. This flaw concerns many more GM vehicles like 2011 and 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, Avalanche, Tahoe, and Suburban models in addition to 2011 and 2012 GMC Sierra and Yukon vehicles and several Cadillac Escalades. Additionally, the car models from the years 2007 and 2014 that were repaired with defective parts were also included in this new slew of GM recalls.
These GM recalls were not caused by reported injuries or accidents. According to news reports, while more than 80,000 are involved in this GM recall, it is expected that less than 500 vehicles will actually need repairing.
GM Ignition Switch Recall
The GM ignition switch recall has been discussed at length during 2014 and the discussion has continued into the new year. So far, over 2.5 million GM vehicles have been recalled due to ignition switch failure. Forty deaths have been officially connected with the GM ignition switch defect. Over 2,000 claims have been filed with the ignition switch defect compensation program that GM established toward the end of 2014. Individuals have until Jan. 31 to file a claim regarding alleged GM ignition switch recall and injuries.
The GM ignition switch defect may have caused thousands of accidents across the country. The main problem comes from the ignition switch suddenly turning from the “start” position to the “off” or “accessory” position. This can happen if a vehicle is suddenly jarred which can happen as easily as driving over a larger pothole. Alternatively, it can also just as easily be caused from a driver accidentally jostling the key with his or her knee or even having heavy keychains.
Once the GM ignition switch suddenly changes to the off or accessory position, the driver loses control of the power steering and power braking. The air bags have often failed to deploy due to the “off” or “accessory” position, resulting in severe injuries in some cases.
Several large GM recalls followed the reports that the GM ignition switch was failing and putting consumers at risk. The automaker claimed to fix the flawed part for free for GM vehicle owners.
General Motors has taken a strong hit in share prices due to the millions of vehicles recalled. So far, the company has failed to make a full come-back since the 2009 GM bankruptcy.
Many individuals have chosen to file GM ignition switch lawsuits against the American car manufacturer, alleging the company knew, or should have reasonably known, about the GM ignition switch defect years earlier. A GM ignition switch class action lawsuit investigation has also been launched.
