An Alabama couple has filed a lawsuit against drug maker AbbVie, alleging that a testosterone replacement therapy it sells is unnecessarily dangerous, according to a recently filed AndroGel stroke side effects lawsuit.
Plaintiff James Mullenix reportedly began using the testosterone treatment in 2006 and continued for about six months. However, he had to be hospitalized because of a stroke in December of that year. Although he reportedly had no other risk factors, as a result of AndroGel side effects, he had to undergo “months of rehabilitation” and is at risk for heart disease and death as a result of the incident.
It is unclear from the testosterone replacement lawsuit whether Mullenix ever received testing for hormone levels related to hypogonadism, the condition that AbbVie popularized as “Low-T” in award-winning advertising. However, his AndroGel class action lawsuit lawyer argues that Mullenix relied on representations that are inaccurate in terms of the risk of stroke and heart attack.
According to studies cited in the AndroGel lawsuit, men who take these testosterone replacement therapy products have at least a 30 percent higher likelihood of suffering those side effects. That may be even higher in men who are over the age of 65. It has been alleged that a large portion of use of AndroGel is not necessary.
The commercials that reportedly minimized AndroGel side effects included a link to an AbbVie website that had a test to determine whether men had Low-T. That test was written by a doctor, but one who later told a newspaper that it took him about 20 minutes to write and had significant issues.
Further, those advertisements do not recommend asking for testing for hypogonadism, and the couple’s AndroGel class action lawsuit lawyer alleges that many men likely take it unnecessarily because the symptoms described are also those that typical signs of aging.
The AndroGel stroke side effects lawsuit is James Mullenix, et al. v. AbbVie Inc., et al., Case No. 14-cv-02914, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
In general, AndroGel heart attack lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
