lipitor-sign-diabetesA Lipitor lawsuit filed in federal court alleges the drug caused a Maryland woman to develop type-2 diabetes.

The Lipitor diabetes lawsuit is just one of thousands of lawsuits that have been filed against the manufacturers of Lipitor as part of a multidistrict litigation managed by Judge Richard M. Gergel, a federal judge in South Carolina.

The Lipitor lawsuit was filed by Diana S., a 56 year old resident of Maryland. According to the lawsuit, Diana began taking Lipitor in September of 2010. She continued taking the medication until January 2014.

Six months after stopping the medication, Diana was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. In the lawsuit, Diana alleges that she suffered severe and permanent injures as a result from taking Lipitor.

The lawsuit accuses Pfizer of negligence, strict products liability, breach of warranty, fraud and misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment.

What is Lipitor?

Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a popular medication prescribed to millions of women worldwide to assist with lowering cholesterol, and risks of stroke and heart attack.

But, Lipitor has been linked to statin-induced diabetes. According to Eric Topol, a Scripps Clinic cardiologist, more than 100,000 Americans may be at risk of developing Lipitor diabetes.

In 2012, the FDA required Pfizer to include the risk of developing type-2 diabetes on the medication’s warning label. Type-2 diabetes is a serious condition that can be deadly if left untreated. Symptoms of diabetes may include dry mouth, increased hunger, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and slow healing sores or frequent infections.

Numerous Lipitor lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer by patients who suffer from diabetes. These lawsuits allege that Pfizer failed to warn about dangerous side effects associated with taking the medication.

The Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-04578-RMG, filed in the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina,  Charleston Division.
