Certificates Go Out in Madela Breastmilk Bottle Class Action Settlement

Madela Inc. has distributed discount certificates to consumers who participated in a class action settlement last year over allegations the manufacturer misrepresented the safety and quality of Madela breastmilk bottles.

The Madela breastmilk bottle settlement was reached in April 2013 and granted final approval on Oct. 3. The deal resolves a consumer class action lawsuit that claimed the lids on certain Madela breastmilk bottles become brittle when frozen, which can cause them to break or shatter if dropped and ruin the breast milk within. These retail products include the Madela Breastmilk Freezing & Storage Pack, the Madela Breastmilk Feeding Gift Set, the Madela Breastmilk Storage Solution, and other Madela products.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit accused Madela of knowing about this alleged defect but failing to disclose it to consumers. Madela denied the allegations and any wrongdoing but entered into a class action settlement agreement to resolve the litigation.

Consumers who purchased the covered products between July 2008 and March 2013 had until June 20, 2013 to submit a claim to receive a $2 discount certificate for each Madela bottle they purchased during the Class Period, up to a maximum of 5 discount certificates ($10).

According to Settlement Administrator Garden City Group Inc., the discount certificates were issued to eligible Class Members on Jan. 23, 2014.
