Chicago Metra Rail Class Action Settlement
By Sarah Pierce
Chicago area’s Metra rail system has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over allegations it violated federal law by printing ticket receipts containing the expiration dates of credit and debit cards. As a result, certain Metra commuters who purchased tickets in 2010 can receive up to $100 from the Metra rail class action settlement.
The Chicago Metra settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Rowe v. Metra, that alleges the Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corporation (d/b/a Metra) violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by providing commuters electronically printed receipts from ticket vending machines located along the Metra Electric line that contained the expiration dates of their credit and/or debit cards. Metra denies any wrongdoing, but has agreed to settle the case to avoid ongoing litigation.
Under the Metra rail class action lawsuit settlement, Metra will pay a total of $50,000 into a settlement fund to be divided pro rata among participating Class Members. The amount of money Class Members can receive from the the Metra settlement will depend on how many people participate, but the maximum amount each Class Member can receive is $100.
Class Members of the Chicago Metra class action settlement include all persons who, from February 8, 2010 through June 4, 2010, were issued an electronically printed receipt from a ticket vending machine one the Metra Electric line which contained the expiration date of the credit card or debit card used for the transaction.
Class Members who wish to participate in the Metra settlement and receive their pro rata share of the settlement money must submit a valid claim form postmarked by November 21, 2011. The deadline to opt out of the Metra class action lawsuit settlement or object to it is also November 21.
