BATTOP foldable infant bath seats have been recalled due to drowning hazards, claims CPSC

Approximately 5,000 infant bath seats sold exclusively on Amazon have been recalled because they pose a drowning risk to babies.

Amazon is reaching out directly to customers that purchased the BATTOP foldable seat after it was recalled by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on April 1.

The recall alert says the manufacturer failed to meet the federal safety standard for infant bath seats, including requirements for stability. The seats can tip over while in use, posing a drowning hazard to babies.

No injuries or incidents have been reported, the commission said, of the plastic white seats, which feature blue, green, or gray restraint bars and have four white suction cups on the bottom.

The affected seats are labeled with model number BB2206 on a sticker at the back of the seat, which also reads: “Advertisement – Warning NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED.”

The baby bath seat was sold on Amazon between July and October 2020 for $40, the recall notice states.

The product packaging includes the following information: “BATTOP Foldable bath seat, Model: BB2206, Manufacturer:  DONGGUAN BABYCARE PRODUCTS CO., LTD., Made in China.”

The recall notice says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled seats and contact BATTOP for instructions on how to return the product. The company promises free shipping and a full refund.

Amazon, on behalf of BATTOP, is contacting all known purchasers directly. BATTOP, based in China, also sells other items on Amazon, including baby toys, pregnancy pillows and tents, Fox reports.

A number of products designed for babies and small children have faced recalls over safety issues. In March, Baby Trend, Inc., which makes car seats for babies and toddlers, was hit with a nationwide class action lawsuit alleging it sold booster seats for small children despite knowing they were unsafe.

Also in March, three class action lawsuits surfaced in New York, New Jersey, and California federal courts filed by consumers who say they were duped after a congressional report revealed high levels of heavy toxic metal contamination in several brands of popular baby food.

Gerber, Beech-Nut, and Plum Organics are accused of misleading consumers about the safety of the ingredients in their baby food by implying that the products undergo rigorous testing.
