More than 4 million removable foam facial interfaces for Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headsets have been recalled by Facebook Reality Labs after thousands of consumers reported developing rashes, swelling, burning, itching, hives, and bumps from the accessories — some of which required medical attention.

The recall notice, issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), warns consumers to stop using the Oculus Quest 2 accessories if they experience any skin irritation. All consumers, says the agency, should contact Facebook for a free silicone cover for the virtual reality headset.

“The firm has received approximately 5,716 reports of incidents of skin irritation and approximately 45 reports of consumers that required medical attention,” says the agency’s notice.

The recalled Oculus Quest 2 headset has a black foam interface that comes into contact with the user’s face. The recalled accessories can be identified by serial numbers that start with “1WMHH” and end with a number below “1264.” A complete list of recalled headsets is available on the CPSC recall notice.

Oculus Quest 2 headsets and accessories were sold in the United States and Canada at BestBuy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and other retailers, and online at Oculus.com, Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Gamestop.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com between October 2020 and July 2021. The foam interface was included in headsets that retailed for between $300 and $400, as well as in packs or individually for between $20 and $40.

Facebook Reality Labs issued a statement in response to the recall of the Oculus Quest 2 accessory.

“We took the skin irritation reports very seriously as soon as we learned about them and, beginning in December, we promptly conducted a thorough investigation including receiving advice from leading dermatologists and toxicologists,” states the response.

“These experts have advised that skin irritation can occur in some segments of the population from many household items—even things like tomatoes or shampoo—and that the rates we’ve seen are in line with expectations,” continues the statement which asserts that Facebook tested the foam interface in the Oculus Quest 2 accessories and found “no unexpected nor hazardous contaminants.”

Facebook says that it has temporarily suspended sales of Quest 2 across the globe to incorporate the silicone cover into all models.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other recalls in the interest of consumer safety.

My son received the Meta Quest 2 for Christmas. He played for about an hour and had an allergic reaction. He has not played it since and is still extremely red and irritated on his face. The VR did come with a silicone piece but no indication as to why it’s included and no mention on the box that an allergic reaction to the foam piece may be possible. Which is what they NEED to include!

Yes me and my son both experienced skin rashes bumps red marks on our faces and feeling of our skin burning from using the Oculus Quest headset 2. It did come with a silicone cover but the cover will not stay on and it itself is irritating as well. After about an hour after using the Oculus headset I still have marks on my face and my skin is still burning

  9. Shari A Hussion says:

My daughter’s face was severely swollen for days. We ended up at Urgent care. We have pictures and we recently gave a peice of the foam to her allergist and he used it in her patch test on her back. So the claims about it being a possible reaction with cosmetics or face creams is bogus. (We also have pictures of the test results) I cant find any information on what exactly it is that they believe is causing the reaction. I just wish they would be more transparent.

  10. Preston says:

The same thing just happened to me and my quest 2 came with the silicone cover. Severe rash and gushing from the face. Add me

    1. Erin jamison says:

This is happening to my son right now. He just bought the Occulus and within a few days of use his face is red, swollen and hurts. But….it’s Facebook’s device so they won’t suffer any repercussions of course
