Natrol Melatonin Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Health product manufacturer Natrol has been hit with a false advertising class action lawsuit.
  • Why: A Massachusetts consumer says the company falsely advertises its melatonin as being drug-free when it contains ethyl alcohol.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed on behalf of consumers in Massachusetts.

Health product manufacturer Natrol falsely advertises its melatonin as being “drug-free” when it contains ethyl alcohol, violating consumer protection laws, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit was filed in Massachusetts on October 7 by lead plaintiff Jessica Lavalley who says that the company has been deceiving its customers by convincing them to buy a product on false premises.

Lavalley says she was particularly harmed by the company’s lies that its Natrol melatonin is drug-free, as she is a recovering alcoholic and abstains from all alcohol — no matter the percentage.

She says in the class action lawsuit that she purchased a bottle of Natrol Liquid Melatonin because it was labeled as being drug-free, and while she was in recovery from alcohol she was interested in a natural product to help herself fall asleep at night.

She got the bottle from Walgreens in June and after taking the Natrol melatonin each night for a couple of weeks, she discovered it wasn’t drug-free after feeling “hungover, groggy, depressed and lethargic.”

“At the time of her purchase in the store, Plaintiff read the front label of the bottle and believed that Natrol Liquid Melatonin was in fact 100% Drug-Free, meaning that it contained no drugs, including alcohol,” the lawsuit explains.

Natrol Melatonin Contains Alcohol, Putting Recovering Consumers at Risk

The lawsuit says that Natrol has capitalized on the increasing trend towards “drug-free” products, which has manifested itself most significantly in the health, wellness and supplements industry.

Despite its large front label representations, Natrol Liquid Melatonin actually contains 10 percent ethyl alcohol, which is a clear, colorless liquid used as the principal ingredient in alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, and brandy, the lawsuit asserts.

The class action  says Lavalley and other consumers have been injured by Natrol’s claims, and many would not have bought the product if they had known the truth.

Lavalley wants to represent anyone in Massachusetts that purchased the Natrol melatonin. She is suing for unfair and deceptive acts that violate Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 93A.

She seeks certification of the Class, damages, legal fees and costs, and a jury trial.

Natrol has also been accused of misrepresenting the health benefits of its biotin products, according to a class action lawsuit lodged in 2017.

Alfa Vitamins has also been accused of false advertising by a consumer advocacy group alleging its supplements are marketed as containing certain ingredients that were not found by an independent lab.

Lavalley is represented by Kevin Crick of Rights Protection Law Group, PLLC and Yitzchak Zelman of Marcus Zelman, LLC.

I would like to be added as well please.
I used this brand of melatonin for a few weeks now and just discovered it contains alcohol. I have a medical condition which prohibits ingesting of alcohol in any form to which I have been having some difficulties with more than usual lately. I will be discontinuing the use of the this product.
    Thank you.

I am so upset about this.
I have been taking this over the course of the last few months & I get tested for alcohol. I came up positive for a test & I do not drink. I went to the Dr.’s the couldn’t find anything. I felt like I was going crazy. You begin to think everyone starts to doubt you & my family & friends have been trying to help me figure it out & we could not figure out what was going on. Thank God I came across this. This sheds some light on the situation. But, I am so upset, you think you’re taking something that’s all natural. Now I wonder about the other brands I rotate between!

  4. Alyce Steiner says:

Add me, I have been taking it for a year off and on. Melatonin is safe for dogs and cats and I gave it to my cat unknowingly who has respiratory issues and other issues. I also have COPD.
