BMW, Zuru, The Harvard Drug Group, Research Products, Infanttech top recalls overview:

Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced top recalls last week for products that may pose injury to consumers. 

BMW recalls iX xDrive50, iX M60 vehicles due to cruise control issue

BMW announced a recall for more than 11,000 new iX xDrive50 and iX M60 vehicles due to a potential issue with the cruise control system. The recall, published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects vehicles with model years 2022-2024. 

the driver may unintentionally activate the cruise control while turning the steering wheel at low speeds, leading to an unexpected increase in vehicle speed, the recall states.

While BMW says the risk of a crash is minimal, it is offering a free fix to affected drivers. The automaker has been investigating the issue since late 2022 and identified a few customer complaints related to the problem. 

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries, according to the recall. BMW aims to resolve the issue by updating the vehicle software and sending owner notification letters July 28, 2023.

Zuru recalls Baby Shark bath toys due to laceration, puncture risk

Zuru issued a recall for approximately 7.5 million Baby Shark bath toy products due to safety concerns. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), includes about 6.5 million Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing & Swim Bath Toys and 1 million Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys.

The decision to recall the products comes after Zuru received 12 reports of children sustaining injuries while playing with the full-size Baby Shark bath toy. These injuries include lacerations and puncture wounds, particularly in sensitive areas such as the genital, anorectal and facial regions. In some cases, stitches or medical attention were required. There have been no reported injuries associated with the Mini Baby Shark bath toys.

As a precautionary measure, Zuru advises consumers to stop using the recalled bath toys immediately. It provided instructions on how to disable the tail fin and mark the product as recalled. Customers can reach out to Zuru for a full refund in the form of a prepaid virtual Mastercard. 

Dronabinol, ziprasidone hydrochloride capsules recalled due to mispackaging

The Harvard Drug Group issued a recall for packages of dronabinol medication due to a packaging error. The recall, announced by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), pertains to Lot T04769 of Dronabinol capsules, USP, 2.5 mg. There is a possibility that these capsules may be mistakenly packaged in cartons labeled as ziprasidone hydrochloride, posing a risk to patients who rely on the medication.

Dronabinol is prescribed to patients with AIDS-related anorexia and for managing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. In contrast, ziprasidone hydrochloride is used to treat conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, according to the recall notice.

If patients unintentionally take dronabinol instead of ziprasidone hydrochloride, serious adverse events may occur, especially for individuals with mental health conditions like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Although no adverse events have been reported thus far, the Harvard Drug Group is taking proactive measures by advising patients to discontinue use of the recalled product, return it to the place of purchase,and consult their healthcare provider.

Research Products recalls steam humidifier due to overheating risk

Research Products issued a recall for approximately 40,000 steam humidifiers due to safety concerns. The recall, announced on the CPSC website, applies to Research Products Steam Humidifiers sold under different brand names, including AprilAire, Coleman, Luxaire, Bryant, Carrier,and York. Around 36,200 units were sold in the United States, with an additional 3,800 sold in Canada.

The humidifiers contain a specific type of electrode wire with a “D” shaped connector that may loosen, leading to arcing or overheating and posing a fire hazard to consumers, the recall notice says. Research Products received 103 reports of the recalled humidifiers overheating, resulting in 10 incidents of smoke or residential fires. The damages caused by these fires total more than $10 million.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected humidifiers and turn them off, according to the recall notice. They should contact Research Products to receive a free repair kit for the electrode wire and assistance in finding a qualified contractor who can provide a free replacement of the electrode connector wires.

Infanttech recalls Zooby video baby monitor due to fire risk

Infanttech has issued a recall for more than 17,000 Zooby baby monitors after reports of the monitors catching fire. The recall, published on the CPSC website, involves approximately 17,100 Zooby video baby monitors designed for car use.

According to the recall announcement by Infanttech, the monitors’ batteries have the potential to malfunction, overheat and burst, posing a fire hazard. Although three incidents of the monitors catching fire have been reported, no injuries have been documented thus far.

Consumers should immediately remove the battery from the plush camera in the baby monitor. The Zooby plush camera and monitor can still be used when plugged in. Affected individuals can contact Infanttech to receive a free replacement battery.
