Research Products has recalled about 40,000 steam humidifiers after receiving multiple reports of the product overheating and causing fires totaling millions of dollars in damage.

The recall was published to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website on June 22.

It applies to Research Products Steam Humidifiers with “D” shaped electrode connector wires sold under the AprilAire, Coleman, Luxaire, Bryant, Carrier and York brand names. About 36,200 of the products were sold in the U.S., and about 3,800 were sold in Canada.

According to the recall, the steam humidifiers containing a specific type of electrode wire with a “D” shaped connector can loosen causing arcing or overheating, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

The firm has received 103 reports of the recalled humidifiers overheating, including 10 incidents resulting in smoke or residential fires, totaling more than $10 million in damage, it said.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Immediately shut off the humidifier

The recalled product was sold through HVAC contractors nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Sylvane.com, Supplyhouse.com, Humidifiers.com and other websites from June 2010 through Jan. 2015 for between $2,000 and $3,500.

The steam humidifiers are generally installed alongside HVAC equipment but are separate units. The specific models included in the recall can be seen here

Consumers should immediately stop using and shut off the recalled humidifiers and contact Research Products to receive a free electrode wire repair kit and assistance with identifying a qualified contractor to schedule an appointment for a free replacement of their electrode connector wires, the company said.

Meanwhile, Vornado has issued a recall of more than 300,000 dual-voltage Steamfast brand Home and Away Travel Steam Irons as the irons can pose a shock hazard.
