A bunk bed recall issued over safety concerns.

A furniture maker has issued a bunk bed recall due to a risk of fall and injury.

According to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) notice, Zinus has recalled about 26,000 metal bunk beds after receiving several reports of the bunk beds collapsing.

The bunk bed recall involves three models, according to the CPSC:

  • The OPLBB model, a black twin-over-twin bed with posts that have a square cross section.
  • The RPBB model, a blue twin-over-twin bed with posts that have a circular cross section.
  • The NTBB model, a gray twin-over-full bed with posts that have a circular cross section.

The model numbers can be found on a label on the horizontal bar of the upper-bunk guardrail.

All of the models affected by the bunk bed recall have ladders built on at the head and foot of the bed, according to the CPSC.

The Zinus bunk beds, which cost between $90 and $240, were manufactured in China and sold online between December 2016 and January 2020 on the Amazon, Wayfair, Overstock, Home Depot, and Zinus websites, the CPSC said.

The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the upper bunk of the models affected by the bunk bed recall and to contact Zinus. The company is offering a free repair kit that includes reinforced brackets or a full refund to consumers who purchased one of the recalled models.

Whether they would like a refund or a repair kit, consumers may contact Zinus about the bunk bed recall at 800-613-1225 between 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, according to a report in the Miami Herald. Alternatively, consumers can contact Zinus via email at retrofit@zinusinc.com or through the contact page on the company’s website.

A bunk bed recall issued over safety concerns.Zinus is reportedly also reaching out to purchasers directly, the CPSC said.

The company has received 13 reports of welds coming apart on the bunk beds; that includes three reports of multiple welds failing at the same time, the CPSC reported.

Three of the 13 reported incidents resulted in minor injuries, such as bruising, after the consumer fell from the top bunk to the floor when the welds gave way.

Consumers who own one of the models affected by the Zinus bunk bed recall and have been injured in an incident involving the bed can submit a report to the CPSC here.

Zinus was named as the defendant in a class action lawsuit earlier this year over accusations the company’s mattresses could open, releasing glass fibers.

The plaintiffs in the Zinus class action lawsuit, filed in March, claim that when the mattresses’ outer cover is unzipped, large glass fibers spill out, causing injury as well as property damage.

One of the plaintiffs says she purchased a Zinus mattress at Walmart in summer 2019. She says a tag on the mattress’ outer cover read “62% Glass Fibers,” but did not instruct the consumer not to remove the cover, nor did it mention that the cover’s removal would cause the mattress’ contents — including the glass fibers — to be exposed.

She says she removed the outer cover on Jan. 20, 2020, to put it in the washing machine.

While it was in the wash, the class action lawsuit says, her sons jumped on the uncovered mattress.

The next day, her husband reported itchy skin and discovered he was covered in tiny glass fibers. The plaintiffs then noticed their whole home was filled with the miniscule glass pieces — in their towels, bedding, walls, electronics and even their car.

As a result, they claim, the whole family experienced dermatitis; one has even had glass fibers removed from his neck. It is not known whether anyone inhaled the fibers.
