Savencia Cheese USA recalled a variety of soft-ripened cheeses that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration published the recall Nov. 4. It applies to select soft-ripened cheeses manufactured in the Savencia Cheese USA Lena manufacturing facility.
According to the recall, the cheeses, which include bries and camemberts, may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the cheese recall states.
Listeria discovered during routine testing, recall notice says
Through routine testing, Savencia identified that processing equipment at the manufacturing site may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, according to the recall notice. It notified retailers, which are removing products from shelves.
Consumers that have any of the recalled cheese products should not eat them and can return them to their place of purchase for a full refund, the recall states.
According to the recall, there have been no adverse reactions to the cheeses reported.
In June, Costco issued a recall for a pair of Tillamook cheeses after gray and black plastic pieces were discovered in a limited quantity of the products.
