Nutritional beverage recall expands to include additional brands, dates

Update: 

• Lyons Magnus has greatly expanded its recall of nutritional and beverage products made under popular brands like Oatly and Stumptown due to potential microbial contamination.
• The company announced Aug. 10 that it had expanded its recall of 53 products by more than 100 additional product codes. The full list of recalled products can be found here. 
• The expanded recall now includes additional brands including Organic Valley, Cafe Grumpy, Tone It Up, Uproot and Sated. The initial recall also included popular products made under the Oatly, Stumptown and Pirq brands, including Premier Protein.
• The recall is being conducted due to the potential for microbial contamination, including from the organisms cronobacter sakazakii and clostridium botulinum, which can cause severe food poisoning.
• Although clostridium botulinum has not been found in products, consumers are warned not to consume any of the recalled beverages even if they do not look or smell spoiled.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of 53 Lyons Magnus LLC nutritional and beverage products made under the Oatly, Stumptown and Pirq brands, including Premier Protein, as the products may have microbial contamination.

The nutritional beverage recall notice was posted to the FDA website July 29. 

The recall applies to several beverage products packed in various formats under many different brand names, which can be seen on the FDA’s website, along with product codes and best-by dates. 

The affected brands are Oatly, Stumptown, Lyons Ready Care, Lyons Barista Style, Pirq, Glucerna (Original 8-ounce tetra carton 24-count club case, sold only at Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Sam’s Club), Aloha, Intelligentsia, Kate Farms, Premier Protein, MRE and Imperial.

While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection, the recall says.

Vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection. The 53 products were distributed nationally. 

To date, no illnesses or complaints related to these products have been reported, the company says. However, they should not be consumed.

Premier Protein, other products did not meet sterility specifications

According to a preliminary root cause analysis, the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications, the company said. 

The company is not currently facing legal action over the nutritional beverage recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

“Anyone who has a recalled product in his or her possession should dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund,” the recall states. 

Meanwhile, Nestle is facing a class action lawsuit alleging false advertising of its BOOST Glucose Control drinks as being for diabetes prevention and treatment could lead to “substantial societal harm” if it is unstopped.
