Recall Alert: Meow Mix Cat Food Recalled Over Salmonella Risk

The J. M. Smucker Co. is recalling certain bags of its Meow Mix cat food due to a potential salmonella contamination.

The Friday recall affects two lots of Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food sold in 30lb bags. It does not affect any other Meow Mix food products, Smucker Co. stated in the recall.

The potentially contaminated cat foods were sold at Walmarts in Illinois, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The J.M. Smucker Co., also known as Smucker & Smucker’s, said it has received no reports of pet illness or adverse reactions so far, and was issuing the recall — in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug  Administration — out of an abundance of caution. 

Smucker’s. is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The recall applies to Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food in 30lb bags with Lot Code 1081804, UPC Code 2927452099 and Use By Date 9/14/2022.

It also applies to Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food in 30lb bags with Lot Code 1082804, UPC Code 2927452099 and Use By Date 9/15/2022.

Smucker’s directed pet owners to check the bottom and back of their bags of Meow Mix cat food for the recall information, and to “stop feeding it to their cats and dispose of it immediately” if it is a match.

Smucker’s. — a listed company that also sells products for humans like jam, peanut butter, jelly, fruit syrups and beverages — said salmonella can affect cats and their owners.

“Salmonella can affect cats eating a product contaminated with Salmonella bacteria and can spread to humans from handling contaminated pet products,” it said. This was especially possible if someone has not washed their hands after having contact with their cat’s foods. 

It said healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Affected cats may be vomiting or have diarrhea, or show a decreased appetite, fever, and excessive salivation.

“If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. Some cats may not appear sick but can spread infection to other animals and humans in the household.”

Salmonella could also result in serious health issues for humans like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms, Smucker’s said.

“Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”

Pet food is often at the center of class action lawsuits. For example, in 2019 a $600,000 class action settlement was reached over allegations that Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky dog treats sickened pets. Milo’s Kitchen LLC is also owned by J.M. Smucker.
