Scooter, hoverboard recall overview:

  • Who: Jetson Electric Bikes has recalled about 53,000 self-balancing hoverboards.
  • Why: The batteries in the product can overheat, posing a fire hazard, with two deaths reported in relation to a fire caused by one of the hoverboards.
  • Where: The hoverboard recall is active in the United States.
  • What are my options: Alternative e-bike and scooter products are available at Brookstone.

A recall has been issued on more than 50,000 self-balancing hoverboard products, as they can cause a fire risk, with two sisters dying after a fire reportedly originated with one of the products.

The recall was published to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website March 30 and applies to about 53,000 42-volt Jetson Rogue hoverboards the company calls “self-balancing scooters/hoverboards.”

According to the recall, the lithium-ion battery packs in the hoverboards can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

“A 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister died from a fire on April 1, 2022 in Hellertown, Pennsylvania,” the recall states.

“The Hellertown Borough Fire Marshal determined that a 42-volt Jetson Rogue was the point of origin of the fire. The fire then spread from the room of origin to other portions of the house, resulting in the deaths of the two girls and smoke inhalation injuries to the girls’ parents. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.”

There have been multiple other reports of the recalled hoverboards burning, sparking or melting, several of which involved reports of flames, the hoverboard recall states.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Immediately stop using and charging the product, recall advises

The recall involves all 42-volt Jetson Rogue self-balancing scooters/hoverboards, which have two wheels with light up hubcaps and have “Jetson” printed on one side of the body and on the top of the footpads.

The recalled hoverboards were sold at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com from August 2018 through June 2019 and at RideJetson.com from January 2019 through November 2021 for between $100 and $150.

The CPSC and Jetson are urging consumers to immediately stop using and stop charging the recalled 42-volt version of the self-balancing hoverboards and contact Jetson for a full refund.

Consumers should follow the instructions here to submit photographs of the hoverboard’s serial number, charger, its purchase date and affirmation of disposal of the hoverboard in accordance with state or local ordinances for lithium-ion batteries.

Meanwhile, DGL Group recalled about 93,000 Hover-1 Superfly Hoverboards due to a software issue that allows the boards to keep working without rider control, causing at least four injuries so far.
