A new Samsung class action lawsuit alleges Samsung released a software update that rendered its Galaxy S22 smartphones inoperable or “bricked.”

Plaintiffs Nadia Ramnath and Michael Guzman filed the class action complaint against Samsung Electronics America and Samsung Semiconductor on Jan. 27 in New York federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the class action lawsuit, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 line of smartphones, including the S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra models, were rendered inoperable following a software update, causing significant financial and practical harm to consumers.

Ramnath and Guzman allege that Samsung failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with the update and refused to offer adequate remedies, leaving many with unusable Galaxy S22 devices.

Samsung released the One UI 6.1.1 update in October 2024, which was supposed to enhance the performance and features of the Galaxy S22 series, the lawsuit says. Instead, the update caused widespread device failures, including boot loops, crashes and data loss, rendering the phones unusable, the plaintiffs claim.

Samsung allegedly refused to repair or replace damaged phones

Ramnath and Guzman allege thousands of users reported issues immediately after the update, but Samsung did not issue a recall or offer free repairs, forcing many consumers to pay for costly repairs or replacements.

“Samsung’s conduct was aggravated by its refusal to offer a recall, refund or meaningful support despite widespread and immediate user complaints,” the Samsung class action lawsuit says.

The lawsuit alleges that Samsung knew or should have known about the defect before releasing the update, as similar issues had occurred with previous models. Despite this, the company continued to market the Galaxy S22 as a reliable, high-performance device, the plaintiffs say.

Ramnath and Guzman want to represent anyone in the United States who bought a Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ or S22 Ultra within the past four years.

They are suing for breach of express and implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment and violations of New York’s consumer protection laws.

The plaintiffs are seeking certification of the class action, damages, restitution, disgorgement of profits and injunctive relief to prevent future harm.

Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics America was hit with allegations it illegally tracks, stores and sells the viewing data of its Samsung TV owners without their knowledge or consent.

I did all the things they said to do. It did nothing to fix it. I have been resorted to using the hot spot off an very old phone just to help my 1,200 dollar phone work for my job. But like everyone else then the camera stopped working and I needed the phone to work 100% for my job. I lost 2 weeks of work not to mention having to buy another phone. I thought my Galaxy 22 ultra was a great phone. I lived the phone until it started dropping calls and not staying connected to the internet. I thought it was my carrier so I switched carriers (that was another headache) not happy at all with Samsung

I’m looking at all these comments and I am in the exact same predicament. I keep my phone from charging over 85 percent and turn it off if it drops below 15 percent battery. I’ve kept protective case and screens on it for years and have never had any issues till this last update. I thought it may need a new battery so I went to ubreakifix and had a brand new battery installed for 100 bucks. This did absolutely nothing to fix the crashing and freezing. Then a couple weeks later I did a factory reset. This also did not resolve the issue. Everything was perfectly fine until this last update sometime in late February or early March. I paid 1200 for this galaxy S22 ultra and have always kept it in excellent condition.

My samsung ultra 22 is dead. Can’t use. Cameras went now rest of it. Trying to reload software. Having trouble there too.
