Hand sanitizer methanol recall overview:

  • Who: nanoMaterials Discovery Corp. recalled its Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution.
  • Why: The hand sanitizer may exceed FDA limits for methanol.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

A Snowy Range Blue hand sanitizer made by nanoMaterials Discovery Corp. is the latest sanitizer to be recalled as it may exceed federal limits for methanol.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall Feb. 21. It applies to Snowy Range Blue brand Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution.

According to the hand sanitizer recall, certain batches of nanoMaterials Discovery Corp.’s Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution may exceed FDA limits for methanol.

“The affected Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution with methanol concentrations that exceed FDA limits potentially could result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death,” the recall states. “Young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute are most at risk.”

nanoMaterials Discovery Corporation says it has not received any reports of adverse events related to the hand sanitizer methanol recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Return, discard recalled product, hand sanitizer recall states

The affected Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution is packaged in 4-oz. spray dispenser bottles bearing the code NDC 75288-100-04.

NanoMaterials Discovery Corp. sold the product nationwide to distributors and discontinued sales in the first quarter of 2021.

The company notified its distributors by mail and arranged for return or disposal of all recalled products.

“Consumers/distributors/retailers that have Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Alcohol Solution branded as ‘Snowy Range Blue’, which is being recalled, should stop using and return to place of purchase or discard,” the hand sanitizer methanol recall states.

In other hand sanitizer recall news, Adam’s Polishes LLC recalled 20 lots of Adam’s Polishes Hand Sanitizer because consumer safety watchdogs have found that one lot contains undeclared methanol.
